I won't be proud of DEC until we get back to delivering software
that mostly works most of the time (and mostly does what most people
want).

    After February 1994 I and a lot of the 780 people to be let go at
    Galway won't feel anything about Digital , least of all pride.

    I'm proud that Digital equipment survived the San Francisco earthquake.
    I am always impressed with the quality of the stuff we produce.  If
    only I could be proud of the company that makes it.

    
    iam proud of DEC because here at the ZKO cafeteria in the spitbroke
    facilities, at the 2:30 break every day, they bring out plenty of 
    good ice cream  of all sort of flavors and make it available to 
    all DECeees at a very reasonable prices so that employees can enjoy it !

    when it is hot and humid like it is now around here at this
    time of the year, a dose of  delicious ice cream can do wonders
    for you !

    i don't think so. pride implies some level of trust, respect, and/or
    concurrance. this last round of FY 94 jobs assignments was the last
    straw. NEVER have i seen a company treat it's employees with such
    contempt in my near 20 years in this business. it really felt like 
    
         "take this job or shove it pal"
    
    hell of a way to motivate people. pride? no, i don't think so. i've
    stopped wearing my digital visor to golf tournaments as well. i'm tired
    of being asked questions (mostly from customers) that i have no (or
    bad) answers to.

    I have pride in my work.  As far as Digital is concerned well, it makes
    some very good but overpriced equipment and software!  The keyword is

        today on CNN wall street segment of the new at top of the hour, the
    announcer said that digital has announced today 9 new PC's that will
    replace the existing ones, and that DEC is giving a 3 years, yes, you
    heard it right, 3 years warranty on these new PC's.

    sounds exciting news. our stock was up today too.

	I have Pride in the technology "that we have today", but 
	technology isn't everything. We have to "capture the moment", 
	do something with it! 

	Too many times in the past, I've seen Digital 
	rise to the top, with "ideas" that were ahead of it time, only
	to flail when it came time to implement or "carry out the plan".

	I've seen companies with great ideas and great technology fall
	by the way side, because they weren't creative enough to bring them
	to market in the right way.

	For example, Back in 79 and 80, Ford Motor Company has the 
	"best" electronic engine control system (Technology), but they 
	had lousy products. They almost went Bankrupt. Fortunately Ford
	is not one of those companies that fel by the way-side. (They're 
	very healthy today!)

	I have pride in the Technology Digital has today! (that's about all
	I can see right now), but, I worry about the "plan". Maybe things
	will be different with the "New Digital", I just don't know.

    I've written this before so bear with me if you have read it before. 
    Digital wanted to cast itself in the role of alternative to IBM, a role
    that both Digital and IBM failed in: to be in every market with every
    product, and be one-stop shop for computing.

    Digital's apparent grand strategy is the emulation of three companies
    or at least three distinctive classes of companies:

    A competitor to Intel in the development and sales of microprocessor
    technology.

    A competitor to Compaq in the manufacture of desktop computers.

    A competitor to EDS in offering system integration services.

    Pride comes from excellence in one of these three "divisions".  Tens of
    thousands of employees don't seem to have meaningful roles in the
    smaller more profitable Digital that emerges from the successful
    implementation of this strategy.  Of course, if it is unsuccessful,
    there won't be a Digital at all.

    The 3-year warranty comes as a reaction to other companies offering the
    same.  It is more follow-the-leader than taking leadership.

    I have a flying buddy who is also a DEC employee. Recently, when asked
    where he works, he has begun replying "I'm self employed."

    I thought about Pat's pride question for a while before I realized
    what would restore "my pride in Digital." 
    
    I will be proud of Digital when careers are once again offered in place

  Interestingly, 'digital today' dated  August 30,1993 has an article on page
  6 tittled:  Digital Pride: WHY WE DO IT.

    On my way out the door this morning I heard a snippit on Good Morning 
    America about a survey of American workers on where their loyality
    lies.  With all the layoffs and companys going under, there has been a
    shift away from loyality toward the company.  Workers are more
    concerned today with being the best they can be at their job and
    doing what is best for themselves and their family.
