2412.0. "Digital logo on other companies business cards" by SMAUG::GARROD (From VMS -> NT; Unix a mere page from history) Fri Mar 12 1993 00:33

    I've noticed the Proteon Inc uses the "digital" logo on its business
    cards.

    In the top right hand corner of the business card it has the following:

    		   /-------\
                   | End   |
                 / | Users |\
                /  \-------/  \
               /               \
              /                 \
             /                   \
            /
            digital -------------- proteon

    Where the "digital" above is the Digital logo. How come other companys
    are allowed to put our logo on their business cards? I tried to enter
    this note in the Companyt Identity conference but it is write logged
    against anybody except the moderator.

    If this has been authorized by Digital does anybody know how many
    companies are allowed to put our logo on their business cards? It
    doesn't seem to make sense to me.

    Comments.

    Direct your questions to:

    Peter Phillips, Manager-Corporate Identity Group
    Peter Phillips @MLO
    DTN 223-2493

    The last time I checked, the Identity Group consisted of
    two people, Peter Phillips and Jan Mazzone.

    Lack of resources is probably one reason why the Company ID conf
    is set 'nowrite'. The other reason is that it is not meant to be
    a brainstorming session. If you have questions, contact Peter
    or Jan directly. I do this often as I am the west coast advocate
    for the Corporate/Company ID group and have always received a
    prompt reply.

2412.2Who are they?11SRUS::DELBALSOI (spade) my (dog face)Fri Mar 12 1993 11:255
Who/What is Proteon? Are they an OEM/ISV/CSO/xyz of ours? I know I've received
literature from people in the above categories on occasion and they use our logo
with wording indicating that they have a close business relationship with us.

2412.3Many Companies Use Our LogoMRKTNG::EARLYThis too shall pass.Fri Mar 12 1993 11:528
    If memory serves me correctly, the President of Proteon is a former
    DECie (Patrick Curtin). Not sure what entitles them to use the Digital
    logo, but they would have had to go through some sort of authorization
    process. Software vendors, (CMPs or Cooperative Marketing Partners)
    have always been able to use our logo on their stuff. This has to be a
    similar situation.

2412.4Yes they are a business partner4106::GARRODFrom VMS -> NT; Unix a mere page from historyFri Mar 12 1993 11:548
    Re .-1

    They are a networking company located in Westford MA. They do have some
    sort of business agreement with DEC. We resell some of their token ring
    routers for starters. I still don't see why that should allow their
    employees to put our logo on their business cards though.

    Many of our business partners have permission to use our logo on their
    business cards. Cognos is another example.

You could also simply call the sales office asking for the salesperson for
the account and leave him or her a message asking why.

2412.7It's probably legalKCOHUB::DAZOFF::DUNCANWhen you see a quack, duck !Fri Mar 12 1993 15:5314
	There are lots of "business agreements" between Digital and other
	companies. Many of these agreements allow the partner to use our
	logo in advertising, press releases, trade shows, etc.

	In a time when many business partners are trying to distance themselves
	from "hardware vendors", I'm glad someone still wants to use our logo
	in their business correspondence, especially in the network space
	where there's lots of competition.

	(and besides ... why are we worried about this ? I doubt that Proteon
	or anyone else use our logo without permission in this way without
	our approval.)

2412.8thought "partner" was disallowedSMURF::WALTERSFri Mar 12 1993 16:1510

    Do any of these cards or agreements actually use the term "partner"?
    A while back, legal was vehemently opposed to this term as it's
    a legal construct which allows digital to be held jointly liable.

    Just curious....

    Take a look in the DECdirect in the networking section, the CNX500 is
    listed in there and it is made by Proteon. We service and sell there
    products.
