2344.0. "Changes in the wind at CXO?" by RCOCER::MICKOL (Buffalo Incredi-BILLs!) Tue Jan 26 1993 02:04

My brother-in-law works in Disk Engineering at CXO and I heard that there are
some pretty substantial changes underway there (such as moving everything back
east). At this point, I'll treat this as a rumor since I haven't talked to him
directly (he's in California talking to another company). This may just be
affecting a single organization... Has anyone else heard anything about this?

Gee, I hope not.. I have one of Colorado's latest creations in
one of my clusters and I have to say that I'm mighty impressed
so far. It's a nice piece of engineering. I think it could
	really sell well.

Well, that would be the deathknell of a nother successfull part of DEC.
Look at the enormous success that we are having in the OEM space with
the DSP series disks (notably the DSP3105 which is winning awards all
    over the place).

Mind you, I am not close enough to know what goodness comes out of CXO
vs what comes out of Shrewsbury, but the very fact of the reduced
costs of living/operation in Colorado, must also be taken into
    consideration...

I haven't seen anything internal, but the consolidation of Disk Engineering
back to Shrewsbury Mass. was announced in the local (Colorado Springs) paper a
few days ago.

It would be nice to see something announced internally first for a change...

2344.4We are done.......CXCAD::COLECCHIWed Jan 27 1993 17:0014
On January 13th CXO 2.5" disk enginbeering met with Mr. Christ. About
the various scenarios that faced us. Our team leaders met first and
tired to persuade Mr. Christ that he shouldf keep us alive here. Then
us worker bees met and chatted with Mr. Christ with an inform Q&A
session. A decision was pending and would be made at 5:30 EST. monadfy
1/18/93. Well the news came and we were told that TPF1.5 was canceled
and that the TPF2.0 would be designed in Shrewsbury by a 5.25" design
team that lost their project. We were told to stop work immediately
and we did. We were told that DEC will pay us until March 31,1993 at
that time we would be transitioned. In thre mean time we should be
    seeking new employment oppurtunities.

Don't believe everything in the paper. They only tell you what DEC
wanted the outside would to know.

The paper said that all the affected people were being given the opportunity to
relocate, find another (internal) job, or be given a severance package. I
gather you're saying that the first choice was not offered... :-(

2344.6How many jobs are going away?TOOK::MORRISONBob M. LKG2-2/BB9 226-7570Thu Jan 28 1993 18:207
How many jobs at CXO are being eliminated as a result of the project can-
cellation and move? Are ALL hardware and software engineering jobs at CXO
being eliminated?
The only good news I can see in this is that engineers who refuse to move
east can still get the pacakge. I have never been there, but I have heard that
some people who have moved there from MA think that moving back east would be
unthinkable.

What about the treatment DLs are going to receive? Are they
going to receive the same great morale boosting choices as some
of the previous CM business Technicians? For those of you not
aware of the great offers, mine was, take a reduction from a
recently promoted Tech 3 position to an equivalent of an assembler's
or tester's job with an over $4000, soon to possibly be over $8000,
a year cut or refuse the jobs, and be considered as quiting.
As for offering a package, as a DL you are told that as long as
there is a job in manufacturing, no matter how demeaning to you
it is you, no matter how far it is out of the field you were hired
for, and no matter how much money you lose, if you refuse you quit.

                THEY SHOOT HORSES DON'T THEY?

I would hope that our management would have the ethics and
decency to keep from slowly bleeding this new group of people
to death, and offer them decent jobs or a thanks for a good job
with a pat on the back of the Package. If there is no jobs in
our job codes should we not be treated the same as ILs who have
no jobs in their job codes?

No, how I see the attitude of our management out here is

WE ARE GIVING YOU A CHOICE WHEN WE FORCE AT GUNPOINT TO WALK
OUR PLANK. YOU CAN JUMP OR WE CAN SHOOT YOU. WHICH EVER YOU
DECIDE WE FEEL WE ARE BEING VERY GENEROUS BECAUSE WE GAVE YOU
A CHOICE. OH, AND BY THE WAY WHICHEVER IT IS, WE CONSIDER YOU
     TO HAVE COMMITTED SUICIDE.

                                    What, me worry.

2344.8My uninformed view of the changes in CXO Engineering...SSDEVO::MERTZFri Jan 29 1993 15:4034
I am an engineer in Storage Subsystems Engineering, so I don't always hear the
details of what is going on in Disk Engineering (which is a different group
reporting to Charlie Christ). My understanding of the situation is as follows:

The TPF 1.0 and 1.5 (2.5" disk drives) programs have been canceled. Disk
Engineering will continue to develop 2.5" and smaller products in Shrewsbury.
Some select individuals will be offered the opportunity to relocate to
Shrewsbury. Those who don't and who don't find other jobs within Digital will
be given TFSO. (My guess is that Digital will not have to come up with very
much relocation money :-) This transistion is scheduled to be complete by the
end of March.

In addition to the TPF project, CXO has parts of the following Storage
Engineering groups:

POPCORN (2.5" disk) - oops, they were RIF'd in Q1.
Disk Drive Advanced Development.
RA7x engineering.
Engineering Operations Group (EOG).
Storage Subsystems engineering.
Storage Architecture (SSAG).
(and possibly more which I haven't heard about.)

As I understand it, the fate of the AD group, RA7x engineering, and the part of
EOG which supports Disk engineering is being evaluated.

I have not seen any indication that there are any plans to touch Subsystems
Engineering or SSAG.

I have also heard disk manufacturing and manufacturing engineering will remain
in CXO. I have not heard anything about the impact to Marketting, Finance,
Personnel, etc.
