2203.0. "First shot in a trade war ..." by BSS::C_BOUTCHER () Fri Nov 06 1992 11:42

With the pending trade war between the US and ECC, I would wonder what
impact would be seen by Digital as a company- good and bad.

For those that don't know, the US has just imposed an excessive tax
duty on white wine coming from the ECC as a result of subsidies being
provided to grape and soy growers. It is anticipated that this will
escalate to many more products, include computer products.

I would like to see the comments kept to the impact of an expanded
    trade war on the company.

2203.1why do you think we have been building more stuff in the ECC?CVG::THOMPSONRadical CentralistFri Nov 06 1992 11:4712

In general only tax collectors win trade wars.

Actually I suspect that Digital would make out pretty well. I don't
think we ship much product either way across the pond anymore. The
big ocean is a different story though. I think. So the effect will
be largely based on people in Europe who may percieve Digital as a
US company and want to take our governments actions out on us.

"I don't think we ship much product either way across the pond
anymore."---maybe finished systems are not being sent across the
"pond" but parts sure are. I think all of the small disks (DEC made)
come from Germany. I know the RF7x ones are made in Germany.

I thought that 30 days had to elapse before any changes were made, so perhaps
there's some breathing space.

2203.4trade wars = depressionBOOKS::HAMILTONAll models are false; some are useful - Dr. G. BoxFri Nov 06 1992 17:3316

Trade wars are good for no one. A lot of economists argue that
the Smoot-Hawley tariffs imposed in 1929(?) were the real
catalyst for the depression. This could get really nasty.

A ray of hope seems to exist in the GATT talks though: according
to reports last night, the French president of the EC has been
accused of deliberately mucking up the talks. I think the head
negotitator resigned under a pall of accuations that the EC president
deliberately aggravated things for personal political gain in
France (is he planning on running against Mitterand soon?)

In any event, Clinton will have his work cut out for him in those
    negotiations.

That wouldn't be a bad idea. Perot is pretty savvy when it comes
       to economic policies.......

Is a draft dodger worse than someone who supplied weapons to Saddam
Hussein? (Sorry, but I couldn't resist.)

Let's put the election politics behind us and try to support our
new leaders, whether we voted for them or not. Clinton/Gore have some
very serious problems to deal with. The outcome of their decisions will
    effect all of us.
