2166.0. "Company Car and being laid off" by MYCKEY::ROMAN (Summer's my 2nd favorite thing) Fri Oct 16 1992 15:00

	I haven't seen this answered anywhere else. If so, please direct me.

If you have a company car and you're laid off, can you hold on to the car for a
certain period of time or can your manager take your keys away and make you find
a ride home (I've heard that this happened to someone). Is there a policy on
this or is this another one that's left up to "local management decision"?

Thanks,

Linda

2166.1Can purchase Company carGRANPA::JNOSTINFri Oct 16 1992 15:074
    I understand that employees who are laid off have been given a certain time
    frame to purchase their Company car. I also heard that the purchase
    price quoted by PHH or GELCO will be reduced by 10%. I am not aware of
    a published policy.

    The engr laid off here was able to drive his car until the Friday after
    his lay-off and then was given a rental car for a month. I am not
    aware of a policy but I'm sure there is one and personnal would have
    it.
2166.3Consult your local TFSO policy committee :-)SWAM2::MCCARTHY_LAServices Reorg, Year 6Fri Oct 16 1992 16:126
    It seems to be one of those "local policy" things. Most of the cases
    I've seen, the TFSO'er get to drive it 'til the end of their
    "notification week" (told Mon-Tues, last work day Fri.). They then have
    some period of time to pick up their plan "A" car, especially if noone
    has a justified need ("it's nicer than mine" is not a justification)
    for the car.
2166.4Marginal BenefitsELMAGO::JMORALESFri Oct 16 1992 21:1417
    Due to the fact that Compary Cars are limited to certain locations and
    job categories (JEC), it really depends on the location where you are
    in.

    I've experience in location I've been where certain job codes have
    company cars, that when the person has been laid-off or demoted, the
    car has been offered to that person at 'fair book value' or the famous
    blue book value (the book is available at any DCU).

    I also know that if the person does not what to purchase the car, they
    are provided with adequate transportation for a period of time (usually
    one or two weeks) until he/she has transportation means again.

    However as all of the previos note writes have mentioned I have not
    seem any Personel Policy/Procedure that discuss these. Though at the
    site there may be something related in the Marginal Benefits section
    of the local site Personnel P/P.

    As I recall, when the first round of layoffs hit the Field in July of
    '91, Zareski had a cow over how the cars were managed. Not sure if
    there was a real problem or simply the perception of one, but when the
    second round hit in October, a memo was issued to affected managers
    informing them that under no circumstances was the employee to be
    granted posession of the car until they had title. In the interim (for
    the 9-week "transition" period), impacted employees were permitted to
    expense up to something like $500 for a rental.

    To the best of my knowledge, this "policy" has not changed.
