2145.0. "Cheap shot at Palmer" by USCTR1::JHERNBERG () Tue Oct 06 1992 12:37

Did anyone see the cartoon (Hammond) in the Boston Globe (?) regarding
Bob Palmer? I little premature and more than a little disrespectful.
Do you think it is a reaction to his weak "coming out" speech? I
wonder what they (!) were expecting to hear.

    Any comments?

Perhaps the papers expect more than Digital employees. As a Digital
employee, I was happy (thrilled) just to hear the first coherent speech
from a Digital CEO in the five years I have been with the company. The
press and analysts were looking for specifics -- how many heads, when,
etc. Hell, I'm just happy that I understood what he said.

I'm looking at it now. For those who do not have access to the Boston
Globe I'll try to describe it.

It shows a Palmer in cowboy garb sitting astride a western saddle.
Palmer is depicted as being a very small person with an oversized hat
sitting on a huge horse. The saddle is labeled "DEC Presidency".

The balloon coming from BP's head says: "Gotta downsize...Definitely
    gotta downsize."

The obvious message is that he is not big enough to handle the job
and will shrink the company to fit his stature.

      Not too nice.

	Re .2

I don't think the message is obviously "that he is not
big enough to handle the job and will shrink the company
	to fit his stature".

It could well mean, for example, that a normal-sized
Palmer finds himself astride something that is simply too
big to be useful for the purpose he has in mind. Geddit?

I haven't seen the cartoon but from the description of it the artist
could have depicted BP on a huge dinosaur and probably been more in
    tune to the harsh reality.

At least Bruce Hammond doesn't have a malevolent streak like certain
other cartoonists I could name. He did some positive drawings during
DECWORLD and the Alpha announcement. BTW, he also draws the "Duffy"
cartoon on the comic page (not one of my favorites, however).

2145.7Mini-slam?GOLF::KEATINGTue Oct 06 1992 16:473
My take on the cartoon was that BP was sitting in the saddle of the
previous CEO, a giant in the industry, and that Palmer isn't a giant.
A slam, but not a vicious one. tjk
2145.8My take...XNTRIK::MAGOONTue Oct 06 1992 17:334
is that it was intended more as a compliment to Ken Olsen than a slap to Bob
Palmer. Sort of like saying it would take a big man to fill KO's shoes.

      Re .8
If it was a complement from the Globe to KO it was a first!! I think
the first thing that should be done is to consider the source. The
Boston Globe is and has been a dirty "rag" for years, and has gleefully
kicked and gouged Digital repeatedly over the years.....and anyone or
anything else in New England that was vulnerable....

I don't think that it tells anything about BP. After all he
hardly can be seen as a person with well known characteristics.

If you thought this was a cheap shot at BP, you haven't seen the takes
on Bill Gates in Outland by Berke Breathed (creator of Bloom County).
Those would be like torpedoes. With nuclear heads.

(Hmmmm... lessee. Could be a reference of him being originally from Texas.)
(Texas? Hmmmm... lessee. They had the Alamo, didn't they?)
(The Alamo. Hmmmm ... lessee. They had involuntary downsizing, didn't they?)

Do you really think it's wise to refer to Mr. Palmer as "B.P."?
Remember we now have a new DEC(K). "Ken" was always "Ken" but
    	Mr. Plamer as "B.P."????

Using the term BP is in NO WAY to be construed or misconstrued to
be disrespectful. In fact, it should be viewed as just the opposite, in
fact... "KO" was sort of a term of affection/respect/esteem/admiration
and/or regard for the individual and position...sort of like "FDR"
was used for the late Prez of the U.S. and "HRM" is used by the Brits..
I personally believe that BP would not be offended in the least to
find that this 'handle' has begun to be used relative to him...

Unless, of course, this is a subtle way of comparing our new CEO
to the character "B.P. Richfield" on the ABC comedy "Dinosaurs".
