Note 3667.0 Who's Who at Digital - updated since June? 4 replies

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK, up until and thru June of 1992, there was a "Who's Who at Digital"
organizational document that was produced somewhere within the company
that started with KO and went down to about Level 3/2 managers. I
haven't seen one since. Does anyone know if the "Who's Who" has been
updated since June? If so, could you email it so me or advise on how
this thing can be obtained (yeah, I know that it's frowned upon to post
    it in notes files).

    Thanks,
    Steve

2104.1The info _is_ useful in working in the companySCAACT::RESENDETue Sep 15 1992 02:505
And since I'm sure someone will wonder why anyone would want to
understand the organization of the company (silly concept, right), I
really used this info in my job. It certainly is strange that a
corporation's organizational structure should be held so closely ...
but after thinking about it, nothing is strange any longer .......

There's a nifty program that uses the reporting structure in
the emp.master.data.file to generate the real tree showing the
reproting structure. It is restricted however.

Yeah, but I'd settle for the Who's Who that Was. It wasn't perfect, but at
least you were able to get some idea of how the company was structured, and
figure out who to contact if you needed something. Now, it's hardly possible
to figure out what IBU's, PCU's, or FOOFOO's still exist or how to set about
reaching someone.

Used to be, you could use the DTN directory or the "Internal Guide to Digital
Organization" publication (hardcopy or VTX). But all these are either defunct
or hopelessly outdated.

A monthly update of the management organization of the company was better than
what we have now to work with, which is ASKENET, or the Ouiji Board ....

Interesting thought. I never thought about Ouiji Board being like the
BoD ... shows there can always be another interpretation to things!

    	Why bother?

Rumor has it that on Oct 2, BP is going to 'TFSO' the top 2-3
layers of management and institute his own 'cabinet'. Therefore
anything you read today (or for the next 3 weeks) is totally
    irrelevant.

    >irrelevant.

I guess my frustration is that this company is PARALYSED.

Yeah, I can and will wait 3 more weeks and then 3 more months after
that for the dust to settle (assuming I am still here, which may not be
a valid assumption for anyone to make at this time).

Meanwhile, our competitors are moving forward. They are not standing
    still.

Yet everytime I have to deal with an organization in this company, more
often than not, the message I get is one of "we can't make any
decisions now", "we're awaiting the results of ...", "we don't know if
we're going to be here" (one of the groups I rely on apparently won't),
"we'll think about it next quarter", ad nasuem.

Now I understand the uncertainty - heck, I've got enough of it to
    spare.

But, if the company just stops doing business, stops engineering
products, stops making marketing plans and executing them, stops
training, ...., we are going to continue to post losses, and the
proverbial "death spiral" that another noter has been mentioning
forever will continue; DEC becomes victum of a self-fullfilling
    prophecy.

The only way to stem the flow is to try, amidst the bloodletting, to
continue with business and turn this beast around. It's not easy, but
the alternative is to wait for the lights to go out and the doors to be
    locked.

Why bother? Because the alternative is "do nothing and die." That is
    not acceptable.

Sorry for the soapbox, so many friends are leaving this week ....

Well, a month has passed without a reply in this discussion, and
Bob Palmer didn't `'TFSO' the top 2-3 layers of management', and
nobody has said they know where to find `Who's Who at Digital'.

Does anyone know of recent versions of this document?

Does anyone know who created the old versions?

You may be referring to the VTX version of the "Guide to Digital
Organizations," which described many groups within the company and
provided names of many managers and their organizational structure.

We (Standards and Methods Control) stopped making that application
available this past June, due to our lack of resources to keep it
current and to the many changes that have been happening in the
    company.

I think your best bet to track down group/manager information is to
look into the VTX listings under "Organizational Information."

I MOST certainly AM NOT referring to the VTX infobase. I'm well aware of that
futile effort to document the organization of this company. Frankly, the
hardcopy was valuable, the VTX infobase was never accurate, at least when I used
it to locate people. It's obviously an impossible task to document Digital, at
least in times of change (altho I wonder if it was ever possible).

So we have a 1 year old DTN directory as the only official document of how
to find things in this company. Is this ANY way to conduct business? No.

Interesting that the author of the Who's Who was TFSO'd. Thanks for the info,
Pat.

No such organization exists. Almost a year ago, CUIP merged with DCD
(course development) from which a new organizations has emerged called,
    Information Design and Consulting (IDC).

I knew this would come up - it always does.

You are off by about 20%. The real number, accounting for multiple
occurences of names and the few OPEN - VP positions is 84.

Whether this is too many, too few, or inaccurate, I just don't give
    a shit.

The real question is how much leadership is on the list.

The problem with 84 vp's is that their total compensation packages are
so big and the dual problem of lack of effective leadership. If that
vp was not a top performer, I would guess the department is not
performing at its maximun potential also. This is obviously drawing
down on the productivity of that organization.

You can't discount the fact that analysts have stated that Digital is
top heavy in its management and vp ranks.

I'm not discounting anything. Just violently apathetic (there's
an oxymoron...) about the number of VP's. What's important is the
quality of management (leadership). Fix that problem and the quantity
issue will take care of itself.

What makes this ratio significant? for the Federal government, the
ratio would be many millions to one. For many banks, it seems as if
the ratio might be 20 to 1. Does this reflect efficiency differences?
If HP has fewer management layers, or a significantly different salary
structure, that might be important. But they may just use titles
    rather differently.

What does the chief information officer do? Anyone ever see any
information from him? We used to have communications/information
managers in my group, but no one ever heard from them. Someone told me
"they're the ones that look the other way and never say hello to you in
the hallway." But that didn't narrow it down enough for me.

If you remove duplicates and don't count vacant slots we have:

BP plus 115 VPs, of whom 11 appear to be women.

Of course that includes some names of VPs that have gone in the last
few days if the rumors are substantiated.

RE: .41 It also does not include many VPs who have that title to
be more impressive on sales calls. They don't seem to have made the
    list.

Can anyone or will anyone care to speculate what the compensation
for these folks would be, and for grins and giggles, what the projected
savings might be if we jettisioned 1/2 of the names on the list.

Can anyone see the problem here? Or are we just so caught up in the
process, we don't see that iceburg off the starboard bow.

Well, if we were to assume "VP" >= 150,000 salary
			Plus 90,000 overhead
			                   =======
					  $240,000

and we "reduced" by 60, it would be $14,400,000 reduction in
expense if these positions could be eliminated.

This is probably conservative, given (I believe) the book number for an
engineer is $100K or so.
