2094.0. "The 10 Stages of Transitional Growth" by SHALOT::ANDERSON (Some fries with that, sir?) Wed Sep 09 1992 19:47

There's nothing in the world I like more than waiting around for
the ax to fall. To help those of you out there who are in same
boat as I am, I thought the following might help you through these
difficult times. Hopefully, you will see that you're not the only
one going through all this -- and that, in fact, there is a final
stage when all things become clear. And remember, if I've offended
anybody here, you're probably not alone.

I strongly suspect the National Rifle Assciation will be offended,
unless you tell us you intended NRA to stand for something else, like
    National Retirees Association.
2094.2whjat are the real stages?VINO::TBOYLEThu Sep 10 1992 05:057
could someone post the documented stages rather than the joke in .0
I've been thinking about this recently and don't remember the stages
there are 5 I think which starts with denial and ends with
    acceptance

Item number 10...NRA was a stupid joke. The idea that those that join
the NRA do so to shoot people/violent types smacks of the typical
knee-jerk reactions the media has to the NRA.

Learn about the organization before you start making stupid comments.

seeing as how I'm the NRA, I'm guessing that .0's joke means when this
DEC experience finally hits me and I progress through the stages
(whether real ones or joked ones), I'm ready to take up arms against
my fellow man for no good reason? Thanks, and I'm sure 3 million other
Americans feel the same way- NOT!

Popeye, my comments still stand. You are stereotyping a lot of good,
decent people who's only "fault", in your eyes, is that they enjoy
    shooting.

This isn't the best place to continue the discussion, read some info,
get the NRA mag. "american rifleman"....if you want a copy, let
me know. In short, learn about the organization before you spout
    out the usual media crap.

    I'm done....

I am also a member of the NRA. I was a member of my college rifle team.
To me, a firearm is something to punch holes in paper with.

The NRA conducts countless training sessions to teach firearm safety.
They give hunter safety courses. They have courses for law enforcement
personnel. They help train the members of the olympic shooting team.
And on and on. To me, *THAT* is the NRA.

2094.9Some real ones...WMOIS::MACK_JThu Sep 10 1992 16:1315
    RE: .2

I believe the (real) stages go something like,

    		Denial
    		Anger
    		Depression
    		Acceptance
    		Growth

or something like that. Not sure though but at least
that's some of them that I recall from some class or
       the other.

What is appropriate is the five stages of reaction to a trauma...like
    being TFSO'd!

My S.O., the nurse says it's DABDA.

Now if I can just remember what DABDA means!

    From memory:

    Denial...this can't be happening
Anger...why is this happening to me?
Bargaining...I promise I'll do thus-and-so if you'll save me from this
Depression...my life will never be the same
Acceptance...time to get on with it, whatever it is!

    Corrections?

Hmmm, it's been about 14 years since my psych class, but I seem to remember it
as ANGER then DENIAL (I remembered that it is a palindrome: ADBDA).

Regards,
Steve.

2094.12I thought Anger was firstVINO::MCARLETONReality; what a concept!Thu Sep 10 1992 18:3922

    > Corrections?

I had the same 5 phases in mind by my order is different.

    Anger
    Denial
    Bargaining
    Depression
    Acceptance

These come from Elizabeth Kubera Ross's book "On Death and Dieing" if
anyone want's to look it up.

Whenever I have a major loss, I try to figure out what phase I'm in
so that I can try to facilitate it and move on to the next phase.

I think most people around here are between the Bargaining and
Depression phases at this point. We might start over if and when
    we finally take our hit.

2094.15are we comparing apples and oranges in here?STAR::ABBASISpell checking is a family valueThu Sep 10 1992 19:1918
I really don't understand this note.

I think this note tries to compare business settings and reflections
in business environments with those carried inside the house hold
vicinity, all this denial/feelings/psychoses/depressions etc.. are
non-business attributes and hence the whole analogy must break down.

in business it is all bottom line based methodology, and just the
facts please, and trying to address business/technological
environments with same emotional and directions borrowed from
the household and relationships type feelings will lead us to
    no where.

this is just my personal opinions, and Iam under no distress to
    say this.
