1973.0. "PC price cut fallout at a competitor" by ALIEN::MCCULLEY (RSX Pro) Wed Jul 08 1992 23:13

    Excerpts from a report in today's Wall Street Journal:

    	"DELL CUTS PAY OF ITS CHAIRMAN, 100 AIDES BY 5%"

    {...}
    "The partly symbolic action, which the company said won't extend beyond
    this year, comes amid efforts to slash corporate costs."
    {...}
    "Last month, Dell said that in the second quarter ended Aug. 2, it
    wouldn't hit the 5% to 6% net profit margin reported in recent
    quarters."
    {...}
    "In addition to reducing pay, the Dell spokesman said the company is
    also cutting back on expensive telephone equipment, lavish office
    furniture and company travel -- all in an attempt to keep costs in line
    with the new generation of cheap machines. However, the spokesman
    emphasized, the company isn't planning to expand the pay cut beyond
    executive ranks. And the spokesman added that Dell doesn't plan to
    slow a hiring binge that has added about 50 new employees a day to the
    payroll since May."
    {...}
    "Michael Halloran, a national director of the Wyatt Co. consulting firm
    in New York, said the Dell move is intended more than anything else as
    a morale booster for the company's employees."
    {...}
    "'It isn't a poverty move; it's a symbolic move,' said Mr. Halloran."
    {...}

    I'm losing R.E.S.P.E.C.T. for Digital/DEC/D.E.C. for not doing
    that.

    If I earnt x 100K I probably wouldn't notice a 5% cut, especially if I
    was also getting such perks as stock options as part of my package...

    True, but executive pay cuts send a symbolic, yet definitive message to
    the troops.

    Well, a stock option to buy X shares of DEC stock at 75 (or whatever)
    is not much of a perk when the stock is 33....

.3:

Actually, you may very well feel the cut. Just about anyone has the ability to
adjust their spending habits to match (or slightly exceed) their income.

It's just that if you made x $100K and took a 5% cut, it'd be much less likely
to mean losing something essential (like house, college fund, insurance, car,
etc).

    I don't think we need to dock KO's pay. If we want to sell PCs, make
    me cheap, push our name and most importantly, SHIP THEM OUT!

    I'm winning the fight to get the order over GATEWAY, IBM, and DELL on
    price (well, not GATEWAY, with them its quality), but once I get the
    order, it takes 20-30 days to get the stuff shipped. I'm talking
    standard 333c stuff.

    I'm told we "under stocked" in manufacturing. Too bad, cause the
    project can not wait and therefore we lose. I've got to de-book an
    order, which will unhook us from an overall order of about 150 PCs this
    month.

    True. Which is why the plan was amended to allow Stock Grants. I'll
    take an infinite number of $33 shares if they cost me $0.
