1888.0. "Is yours a boss or a leader?" by ZPOVC::MICHAELLEE () Fri May 08 1992 02:36

    Hi,

This is seen at a customer's place...

               BOSS OR LEADER

1 The boss drives people, the leader coaches them.

2 The boss depends on authority, the leader on good will.

3 The boss inspires fear, the leader inspires enthusiasm.

4 The boss says "I", the leader says "WE".

5 The boss fixes blame for the breakdown, the leader fixes the breakdown.

6 The boss knows how it is done, the leader shows how.

7 The boss says "GO", the leader says "LET'S GO".

8 The boss uses people, the leader develops them.

9 The boss sees today, the leader also looks at tomorrow.

10 The boss commands, the leader asks.

11 The boss never has enough time, the leader makes time for things that
     count.

12 The boss is concerned with things, the leader is concerned with people

13 The boss works hard to produce, the leader works hard to help people
     produce.

14 The boss takes credit, the leader gives it.

I think the base note really misses the mark. What it describes are
many of the qualities that define an effective manager; someone who can
get the job done with the fewest resources, at the lowest cost, in the
shortest time, with the greatest satisfaction to the organization. A
compamy as complex as DEC needs lots of good managers. But good
    managers can't thrive without leadership.

A leader can be characterized by three qualities, all of which must be
    present----

    	1. A leader has a vision.

    	2. A leader is able to communicate to and share the vision with
    the organization.

    	3. A leader inspires action to achieve the vision.

A company can't afford to have too many leaders, else anarchy will be the
result. On the other hand, if it doesn't have any leaders, chaos will be
the result. Which condition applies to DEC?

    Re: Note 1888.29 by HOCUS::SEARL

I liked your analysis of the qualities of a leader. However, I don't
    agree with this statement:

> A company can't afford to have too many leaders, else anarchy will be the
> result. On the other hand, if it doesn't have any leaders, chaos will be
> the result.

My view of this is that we each need to be a leader within our own
sphere of influence. That is, we must first be a leader to our own
personal self, with the vision of what kind of a person we want and
choose to be. Then, we each need to be a leader to the things that are
within our own personal stewardship, such our job assignment, whatever
it might be, or within our own family, if we have one.

When you look at it this way, there does not have to be anarchy, if
each person is being a leader over the things that belong to them to
lead. As they succeed in doing this, their sphere of influence will
grow, and they will generally be given more things to be a leader of,
perhaps in the form of a promotion, perhaps in less formal ways as they
assist their co-workers. If they do a poor job of leading, their
effective sphere of influence will generally get smaller.

I think every person should strive to be a leader, in the sense that I
    have discussed it.

To understand .23 as it was intended, you have to have been a
follower of the "Saturday Night Live" TV show for the past
        few years.

Otherwise, you will take it in a very different light, and
        probably be offended.

To get more of the original intention, substitute "wimp".
