1870.0. "FAB OPENING AT PHOENIX" by GSMOKE::MORELOS () Mon Apr 27 1992 20:39

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE IS GOING TO BE A FAB OPENING
ON PHOENIX DIGITAL SITE. THERE IS A RUMOR GOING AROUND THAT
THERE IS A NEW FAB OPENING AT PHOENIX.

And now the rumors behind the news...

Last I heard, Hudson would be getting a new fab....

Also heard that we would outsource Alpha if it really took off...

Havent heard much about Phoenix, other than the Union Hills facility
    was just sold to Honeywell.

Would truly be a surprise if we built a fab in Phoenix. Those things
cost $300-800 million these days! ( I assume you are talking about a
    semiconductor fab....yes?)

I would think that if a Semiconductor fab rumor was floating about, it
would be hot and heavy here in Hudson. It is not! As we type they are
breaking ground here for the new fab anounced sometime ago. We are
still waiting for final funding to be announced.. Ground breaking has
    already been funded.

So you get to wear the cute "bunny" suits, huh.

re the silly notion of shutting down Fab lines. when we are touting
with what looks like some degree of success alpha as the "chip du
jour", we better be ready to make 'em. Semiconductor Fab facilities
cost multi-millions to build, and take a long time to bring on line...

While on the subject. Can someone refresh my memory on the different
clean room categories. I seem to recall class 10 and class 100 or
somesuch. I heard stories of one of the rooms in CXO being a non-human
    room - robots only...

Yeah, they got rooms like that in most DEC facilities ... sometimes they
are small rooms with a single desk and two or three chairs, sometimes
they are huge open-plan areas but there are certainly a lot of robots

I must disagree. I think that shovels are (or should be) standard
issue office tools for all Digital employees to dig through all the
    non-official non-pronouncements we are not-reading in the not-nice
press these days about non-layoffs and non-restructuring and our
    non-problems.

Shovels are most definitely a required tool at Digital today ....

I think they're gonna start putting those stickers w/ our paychecks,
just to remind us, so we'll each have one to donate to the cause.

And yes, after 16 years I still have some sense of humor left!

1870.26Are FAB's unique in their startup cost?16BITS::DELBALSOI (spade) my (dog face)Tue May 05 1992 02:0917
re: .15, Peter

I've often wondered why this is (having not the foggiest clue of how chips
or wafers are made). It always seems that these facilities need to be custom
built, rather than retrofitting an existing one (but I think, we've done that
too, no?)

What makes these so unique and expensive?

Warehouses, office complexes, cabinetry plants, PCB facilities, etc. all have
specific expensive needs as well, don't they? Why is a FAB generally considered
a major deal?

Fab sites are typically built away from heavy traffic/truck areas
(which would make the Black Canyon highway location of PNO
ojectionable) due to the vibration and shaking induced into
the structure. We're talkng making _small_ stuff here!

Floors are mechanically isolated wherever possible from other
vibration-inducing areas for the same reason. Isnt HLO fab built
on a "floating" granite structure, or is this urban folklore?

    Polling your chain here john..

This fab here is a class 1000 and we try hard to keep like a 100..

The air system here is set to keep as little if not no dirt or dust from
entering the work area..All personnel here entering the fab wear coveralls,
hood and boots..SPECIAL WHITE OUTFITS..ESG rated Ect..

The HLO buildings are built on concrete sections that ressemble a waffle
or a big chocolate bar, so that sections can be broken apart on the grooves
to isolate the slab under one part of the building from another.
1870.31Much more that just a "clean" room...ASDG::SBILLTue May 05 1992 17:2714

One of the BIG reasons fabs are so expensive and time consuming to
build is the facilities that are needed to support the processing. Not
only does a fab need super-clean air, it also needs super-clean
deionised water, it needs process chilled water, very sophisticated
HVAC (temp and humidity control), process gas distribution systems,
chemical storage, hazardous waste treatment/recycling, not to mention
the electrical needs of electricity-hungry processing equipment like
diffusion furnaces, implanters, etc. I'm sure that I've just scratched
the surface here. Building a fab is NOTHING like building an office
building or a warehouse. It's is many orders of magnitude more
    complicated and expensive.

The rumor mill says HLO was built on a fault-line. Silicon Valley
    isn't exactly stable either.

PNO wouldn't be bad, if DEC was going to keep it. Some of the Motorola
and Intel sites here are near major freeways as well.
