1784.0. "Jam yesterday, jam tomorrow ....." by CSC32::S_HALL (Gol-lee Bob Howdy, Vern!) Mon Mar 02 1992 19:50

If this weren't so funny, I'd burst into tears !

	Our 18-month-old workstation order ( for DECstation 3100s )
	just got cancellled. Why?

The product has reached "end of life".

We actually managed to have workstations on order
throughout the entire lifecycle of a piece of
equipment -- without actually getting any !

Now, we have DECstation 5000s on order...

Anybody got lifecycle projections on this one, so
we can start the cancellation paperwork in advance ?

	Oh my aching back !

Why does it take 18 months to order a workstation?

if you guys have access to computers , may be you can consider sending
your future order via e-mail directly to the workstations order department,
that got to be faster than using US mail, which is , i assume , what you
used to send your order for the 3100 , and is the reason for the long delay
    in processing your order.

I cant guess why else your order would take such a long time to process,
you are not suggesting that DEC somehow is actually slow, are you?

1784.14The story of BOBW::COOKIE::WITHERSBob Withers - In search of a quiet momentWed Mar 04 1992 03:5630
'Tain't nothin' new:

I have a MicroVAX II/GPX system that I use as my workstation. I've had
it a couple of years. Here's how I got it:

Working in CSSE, my manager at the time believed that his employees should have
the same facilities as the other employees working on a project. SInce they
were getting UVAXIIs, we ordered some. The rest of the project got theirs.

Our orders kept getting pushed out and pushed out.

Getting frustrated, my manager decided to order "something cheaper" and ordered
us VAXStation 2000s. After waiting several months, a very senior manager,
whose name I won't mention but whose initial is "Z", cancelled ALL CSSE orders
for that fiscal year. Well, back to the 'ol VT100.

The, one day, the facilities guy walks into my cube and says, "Bob, your
workstations are her. Who gets them?"

I'm flabberghasted and walk to the loading dock to find three
brand-spanking-new MicroVAX II/GPX systems.

It seems that the order was in the pipe for Sooooooo long that, when the bigwig
cancelled the orders for that fiscal year, he missed our original workstation
order. It had been on hold so long that it did not qualify for the "cancel
everything this year" edict!

And that, finally told, is the story of BOBW::

Yep, you're right. My beef was not with IEG. It is with
a system that allows budget to be allocated, justifications
approved and plans to be made for equipment, only to have
a bean-counter or other faceless, useless bureaucrat
to bring the whole thing to a screeching halt.

This after a VICE PRESIDENT personally signed the order
last fall and assured us that we'd "have the equipment in
	a week."

Basically, one "Homer Pirkle" with thick glasses and
a green eyeshade can stop delivery of equipment that
has been approved (probably) by Ken Olsen.

As to the remark about not needing the equipment, you try
	the following:

	Supporting:

	Ultrix versions 3.1, 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, 4.2a
	for VAX and RISC.

	VMS and VMS/Ultrix Connection
	VMS and Fusion
	VMS and Wollongong WIN/TCP
	VMS and Ultrix SoftPC

	Mactintosh TCP/IP connectivity
	IBM PC TCP/IP connectivity

	OSF1

	VMS and POSIX
	VMS and Ultrix DECmcc
VMS and Ultrix DECnet Phase IV and Phase V

without a good number of workstations and system to run them
on. VT100s don't cut it. Period.

The problem that I had with Nassar's sense of humor is that it was
obscured by the possibility of English being used as a second language,
so that what I thought might be humor might instead be some difficulty

correct language against anyone. Therefore I do not necessarily think
he is doing a disservice to anyone. The first "nassar" I read shook me

I believe your English is probably quite good, if so it is your typing

SH>>	After the incredible delay on the 3100s ? Come on!

The one difference between the 3100's and the MAXINE's is that the
order is *really* in IEG's system and you can look it up iff you
know the DEC number. Before "Z" signed the order it was sitting on
someone's desk and that person was not located in any CSC building
although he does report to "Z". If it wasn't for another member of
your group, there is no question that the order would still be tied
	up in bureaucracy.

We will get the workstations, the MAXINE's for the lab in ALF HAVE
shipped. Yours were scheduled to ship 2/28, but slipped due to
	some odd problem.

It's a bummer working under your circumstances (no or ancient hardware),
	but it will be fixed.

I guess I just lost my sense of humor. I don't know whether you are
kidding or serious in your comments on Naser's English. Many of us,
who learned English as our native language, still have difficulty with:

    	o Expressing thoughts clearly
    	o Correct use of grammar
    	o Typing/keyboard accuracy

Examples abound in the daily communications within our organization
(including the notes files and the memos that fly across the wires).
Therefore, I find the undertone of your linguistic superiority as a native
English speaker misplaced, and the need to translate Naser's note
offensive - regardless of whether you agree or disagree with him. We
are, after all, a global company/community of many language origins. In
addition, there are many of us whose parents, grandparents, etc. did
not speak English as a primary language - so maybe we shouldn't be so
    quick to throw stones.

it is amazing you never seen one? most engineers we use them to
do our work at them, are you like just hired to DEC?

some companies like microsoft and borland probably use just pc's and have no
workstations. workstation is more effective to use for work than is a
pc would be ,i think you like them more than a pc or a terminal once you
get used to them. it is not hard really.
    good luck,

Gee Cat, I thought I was the only only one who supports workstations
and doesn't have one. "It's on order" is kinda like "the checks in the
mail". When I need to use one to support a customer, I have to go over
to one my neighbors and say " Pretty please..can I, please can I?, I
promise I won't break it or anything, can I???

Gee, a bus stops at a bus station and a train stops at a train station.
Why would a manager wanna buy a work station?

well, i used to have a compaq 25 mhz 386 running OS/2 that was more
of an effective workstation than any of the 3 vaxen in my office.

We like to believe there's a difference between a PC and a
"workstation" (ie:running unix or vms). There is, the PC tends to do
the job a hell of a lot better for much less. What scares me is that
the outside world has discovered this, but somehow most of Digital
    seems to have not.

would if i could. But i should be so lucky as to see a 3100. But then
again, other than read notes, i'm not what i'd use it for, other than
    writing digital software.

    re: What's a workstation?

Dick, it's a little computer in your office that runs a terminal
emulator several times more "casually", so that you can do most
of what you used to do when you had a good old VT100. :-)

    Oh.......well I'm be horn-swaggled!!! I thought all those engineers
were just far-sighted and needed a bigger tube. So tell me, why do
all the secretaries have them too, and managers who want to play games?

Actually, I have a Smith-Corona Personal Word Processor that keeps me
confused enough as it is. {:^)
