1691.0. "Farewell to another Dinosaur" by SNOFS1::WILES (NEMO) Tue Dec 10 1991 02:30

Well folks it's been great reading this conference for a number of
years but the Grim Reaper (transition) has finally caught up with me
and I leave DEC after ten years of service. I wish things could have
been different but atleast the money's good and my mortgage is dead.

I still believe that this is one of the best places to be in the
computer industry and I can say that in all honesty. I've moaned and
groaned with the best of them and many times felt I had been given a
raw deal bit overall it's been hard work and fun at the same time.

My biggest loss will be the relationships that I've built up over the
past ten years across Australia and back in the U.S. Nothing (Large
Salary included) can make up for that loss. I just hope that there are
enough of you left out there that will continue to try and push the
fact that overall company health and people are more important than
    short term appeasement of shareholders.

    Farewell and Good Luck,

Ye gods, are we going to have a new "good bye" note, every time someone
leaves. Someone want to sponsor an "I'm leaving" conference...

Seems like a topic devoted to goodbyes would be sufficient. We could
title it "Ave atque vale" just to make the search more difficult.

Yes, mass graves are much more efficient aren't they?

Before I'd read your reply, my own imagery of this note was
strongly reminiscent of Arlington National Cemetery, which had
quite an impact on me when I visited there.

Upon reflection, your analogy is more accurate.

No one believed. They listened at his heart.
    Little-less-nothing!-and that ended it.
No more to build on there. And they, since they
Were not the one dead, turned to their affairs.

Well to those that have a problem with a goodbye note, let me
remind them that they are under no obligation to read the note,
and that they have the power *and* the right to just say no.
In other words, if it bothers you, just hit NEXT UNSEEN.

This conference is dedicated to the Digital way of working, and
as far as I'm concerned, saying goodbye when you're leaving
(quitting or being T'ed) is perfectly acceptable.

Mr. Wiles, goodbye and good luck to you. I've never been to
Australia, but I've met some great DEC people from down under
(Phil W. and Danny Mc...how ya doin?). Must be great to have
    	the mortgage off your back!

Apparently, these days "the Digital way of working" includes being
downright rude to your co-workers.

What purpose is served by these stupid exchanges?

    Amen.

It truly amazes me how insensitive some people can become. Particularly
when they don't have to look the other person in the face.

Good bye and good luck, pal. The unfortuneate facts are that many many
more are going to follow you.

Let's hear the message in the spirit in which it was written,
and not beat the %%% out of him.

I don't get around to reading notes often, but when I do- I
    usually find information or inspiration....

I think there's plenty of us that share your sentiments, come
    what may.

    Good luck!

    re: last several

I think that some of you are misunderstanding some of the previous
    replies.

I, for one, am all in favor of "farewell" notes. To deny them, or
to insist that they all be lumped into one "big goodbye", denies
the truth. Are people concerned about the negative impact of seeing
a torrent of scores, perhaps hundreds, of goodbye notes from our friends
and former colleagues? Too bad. The truth hurts, doesn't it?

The tidy among us might like to see all of these notes organized in
a separate conference. I believe that saying goodbye to co-workers
has now become an integral part of "The Way We Work At Digital",
    the sub-title of this conference.

My feelings go out to the author of the base note, and I wish him
the best of luck in finding new employment and picking up his career.
