1671.0. "Why is Previous Topic Gone??" by HAAG::HAAG () Thu Nov 14 1991 22:00

    Can someone tell us why the previous note is set hidden?? If something
    so violates policy why not just delete it instead of leaving this big
    mystery lying around?

1671.1We have emergencies sometimes...SCAACT::AINSLEYLess than 150 kts. is TOO slowThu Nov 14 1991 23:069
    The moderators were notified of the topic via mail and all I could do
    at the time was set it no-write and hide the replies. We don't delete
    notes without extracting them to be returned to their authors first.
    Apparently, no other moderator was able to do anything between the time
    I hid them and was able to delete them.

1671.2Oh, I offended "someone"?INFACT::BEVISI DO NOT drink too much COFFEE!!Fri Nov 15 1991 10:2929
    Well, I been contacted twice off line regarding a query I put into this
    topic yesterday. It is now gone.

    I was accused of violating company policy, because I appeared to be
    attacking "edp" - by asking if I had obtained his real name (of course
    I had, and I new that as well as any of you).

    I am going to re-read the policy again - with all the "attacking" going
    on in here I must not have the proper licensing, or some such.

    My apparent "attack"? Listing his actual name and stating my opinion:

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    "It really bugs me that someone who is so verbose hasn't the courtesy or
    initiative to take ownership of his/her words."
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    MY humblest apologies to "edp" and averyone else whom I offended by my
    having the unfortunate luck to be offended by the friendly discourse found
    in earlier topics. I now have a bright red dot on the "next_unseen" key
    which should aid me in the future.

    Have an extremely wonderful day, everyone, and remember tomorrow is
    the first day of the rest of your life - may yours be filled with
    happiness and good cheer for ever and ever.

    have a nice day,

Why didn't you just send Email to the person in question and ask his name?
1671.6What's in a name?MU::PORTERviewer discretion advisedFri Nov 15 1991 15:2819
re .2

I think you're a bit off the mark here. "edp" is a perfectly reasonable
name to use. The "node::edp" designator identifies him as readily
as "MU::PORTER" identifies me. "edp" is (I suppose) an individual
login account, and as such identifies one user (i.e., it is not a group
account), and as such demonstrates the necessary accountability.

Furthermore, it doesn't seem to be constructed with intent to
obscure -- your complaint seems to be based on your feeling
that he ought to obey the usual VMS convention of using login
name == last name. In the Unix world, using login name == initials
seems to be at least as common. According to his ELF entry (yes,
ELF FIND EDP works) he works on Unix-based software, so it seems
reasonable that he uses Unix conventions. For all I know, he's
noting from a Unix node.

Attack the man's viewpoints and debating style if you wish, but don't
get side-tracked by irrelevancies, please!

Or, to state it more succinctly -

how does MU::PORTER identify me more completely than MU::DP ?
1671.8SSDEVO::EGGERSAnybody can fly with an engine.Fri Nov 15 1991 20:319
    Re: .-1

    Well, I can find a Porter in ELF with a node MU. I can't find a DP, so
    MU::Porter does a better job of indentifying you. At least in ELF. Are
    there places where the reverse would be true?

    In the case of Eric Postpischil, ELF recognizes "EDP" as you pointed
    out, so he is well identified there. Because of that I don't think the
    earlier noter has a valid point.

    This is NOT a conference that should be used "slam', "go after",
    "insult", or "challenge" other peoples comments. Not that you did. But
    to much of that is happening in this conference lately. To those of you
    so inclined to resort to that kind of "name calling" why don't you just

                   TAKE IT TO THE 'BOX.

    Sorry, Tom, that was a hypothetical. If MU::DP was a valid user
    name (it isn't - but I wasn't clear about that) I would have made sure
    it was ELFable as well...

1671.12A word or two regarding SOAPBOXSDSVAX::SWEENEYTruth, Justice, and FlamesSat Nov 16 1991 00:0412
    Actually, SOAPBOX is not a conference that tolerates name calling and
    insult either. SOAPBOX is a general discussion conference, mostly
    politics, current events, and popular culture.

    The participants of SOAPBOX are not obliged to show sensitivity and
    courtesy to each other as demanded by some other conference moderators.
    However, the same policies that apply to all VAX Notes Conferences
    apply there against unwanted name calling and insult.

    than those in SOAPBOX.
1671.14FSOA::DARCHblind vision, blind faithSat Nov 16 1991 09:5510
    Thanks, Pat. It seems we've gotten a lot of people lately who are
    under the impression that it's perfectly acceptable to swear and call
    people nasty names in SOAPBOX. It isn't. In fact, we're a lot more
    strict than many other files I've read/written in. We have to be...
    the debates often get quite heated and would get totally out of hand
    if we allowed the language and personal attacks I've seen in some of
    the 'warm fuzzy' conferences.

1671.15The insulting words are just, er, "kidding" - right Pat?CSC32::CONLONDreams happen!!Sat Nov 16 1991 14:449
    They're right, folks. When you go into Soapbox and see people calling
    each other "Twit" (and/or nasty nicknames) left and right, please remember
    that they are NOT insulting each other.

    They are only engaging in a "kidding around" that all parties agree
    on (even the parties who say, "Hey, this isn't funny.")

    And don't forget it (if you don't want to be called by some insulting
    name yourself!)  :-}

    I personally believe that when the day comes that employee interest
    notesfiles are banned at DEC,SOAPBOX will be the first to go thus
    making it easier to ban other conferences. Note that this action will
    probably come from a committee whose members probably read only work
    related notes. (if they read notes at all)
