1511.0. "What happened to SWAS?" by UKCSSE::BUDD (I'd rather be turning) Fri Jun 28 1991 13:48

I am the CSSE engineer responsible for VMS Wide Area Device Driver
development (WANDD) Can anybody help me, or suggest an alternative
    contact for the following problem.

The Corporate Backbone Networks (CBN) Engineering development group
in Reading (UK) are constantly receiving requests from customers for
special application specific modifications to the corporate WANDD
software product. (They have 5 pending at the moment)

The nature of these modifications is such that they would only be
specific to a particular customer's application, and not a feature that
could easily be incorporated as a future release of a corporate product.

Some of these customers are are Digital's major accounts eg Boeing
Corp, Slumberger, and Bell Corp etc, so it is important that Digital
    provides a solution for them.

Most of the software changes can be easily produced, but the CBN
engineering development group is not in the business of working with
customers directly for these one off solutions as their priority is to
develop main stream corporate products. In addition there is an issue as
to who would provide follow up or sustaining support once a solution was
    provided to a customer.

Does anybody know of any group or function within Digital who could
provide at least a "front end" interface to the customer, even if CBN
engineering provided the base level code changes? I have already tried
the Customer Support Centres, but they do not appear to be in the
    business of supporting non-standard products.

With the re-organisation of Customer Services/EIS/SWAS I do not have
any contacts that I could approach for a solution. This is a world wide
    requirement, not just European.

Any help, names, pointers etc would be most appreciated

1511.1If there is a profit....BEAGLE::BREICHNERFri Jun 28 1991 15:208
Might sound like project business for an EIC (ex CSS groups).
The one that does Networking projects happens to be in Annecy
    France.
Try to contact Matt Durnford DTN 887/4013

and tell him about my comission fees! ;-)

    Martin,

Digital is now structured and organised by Accounts which are
themselves managed by an "Entrepreneur". Each entrepreneur would
decide if a particular customer request represents good profitable
business for Digital. (I am not aware of any other way of doing
business btw...) The entrepreneur would then locate and fund the
appropriate resource to fulfill the customer's need. This need not
be another (internal) Digital group although we hope that in most
    	cases it would be.

I therefore recommend that customer requests are channeled through
the account teams so that funding and sponsorship of the task can
be done. I will mail you a list of UK Service Centre Managers which
may help to point you towards the correct account team.

One question though: Why are the CBN Engineering Team developing
products that customers don't want or which don't meet customers'
requirements. I thought part of our recent 'restructuring' work was
directed towards developing fully supportable, high quality products
that properly fulfil customer and market needs during the timeframe
    	that customers need them?

Or have I been out to lunch again.....

    	Ian (UK Product Performance Manager)

The Networks Special Solutions group in PK does projects such as the ones you
mention. NSS is part of T & N EIC. The acting group manager is John Mako,
