1472.0. "Wage 2 to Wage 4" by WMOIS::COE_J () Thu May 16 1991 16:21

I have been working for DEC off and on for about 10 years and
am finding it VERY DIFFICULT to become a wage class 4.

My current "Title" is Dept Coor 3, but do not have any secretarial
responsibilities. I performed the function of a Buyer I, but when it
came time for my review, Buyers were eliminated in the orginization.
But the function was still performed and is now being held by a
    contract worker.

I recently transferred to another dept within DEC in hopes that
the opportunity would be greater. But my title still remains the
same and my new job function is more on the analytical side.

What I am looking for is folks who might have been wage class 2
and have progressed to a 4 or even other comments that might help
    me in achieving my goal.

I forgot to mention that I am attending school and my major is Business

    	I went from a Engineer Aide II(WC2) to a Software Engineer II(WC4).

Because of it I got a 56% raise.

I didn't find a problem with the transition at all! 8-)

The only thing I don't like is no overtime.

Well, the way I did it was to quit, go back to school full time and
after I had my degree, I interviewed for jobs and found a group that
wanted to hire me. Kind of drastic, but fortunately I was able to
do it (go to school full time). I didn't quit and go back to school
with the intention of coming back to Digital but I'm glad it worked
out that way 'cause I like working here.

I think you need to be a lot more specific about what job you want.
Moving from WC2 to WC4 is hard enough (or so I've heard, though I have
no idea why this should be). Figure out what job (or jobs) you want,
figure out if you're qualified yet, and if you are, write your resume
    and go for it.

You might also want to ask your question in IKE22::WOMANNOTES-V3 (KP7
or Select will add it to your notebook). The probability is very high
that there are some women who read that conference who started out as
secretaries and have moved up and they could tell you how they did it.
If you think prospective hiring managers are zeroing in on your
secertarial job titles, and are being unduly influenced by this, then
perhaps you could write/restructure your resume to de-emphasize the
titles and emphasize your job skills.

(I looked in the Jobs Book and couldn't find any jobs with the word
buyer in the title; either that means it was renamed something else,
or there aren't any openings right now; or, it could mean that I don't
know how to move around in VTX.)

I have done in another branch, but you do have to go to Personnel and
ask for the Job descriptions. THen compare the job description with
what you are doing. Improve yourself where you find you are missing
something, (Library, Learning Center, School, Courses), then bring
yourself up to the standard of a Wage 4. You have to work for it and
more, it is not easy. You have to exceed your skills to become the job
description. If you know more, if you have done the practical side of
it, it is better for you.
There use to be a book with the hardcopies of job descriptions, I
believe they are now on the system VTX. You may have to get the help of
personnel for the Jobe Codes. Good Luck.
    Look through VTX!

.3 and .4 have it. Find the WC4 job you want and apply for it. I went
from 2 to 4 13 years ago (things could certainly be different now!).
But the bootom line was that I saw a new opportunity and worked for the
    position.
    Good luck

I recently was promoted from wc2 to wc4. Believe me it isn't easy at
all! I was in operations and was doing ULTRIX System management for
over a year before I was promoted to ULTRIX Information Systems
Specialist (wc4). I worked very hard, read as many manuals as my mind
could handle and spent, like I said, over a year actually doing the
    work (without the pay).
What helped me was JOQ (Job Overview Questionnaire). It's very similar
to JEC's a couple years ago. Our whole organization had to go through
it, but since I was very definiately in the wrong job classification
I was the first one to go through it.
    Good Luck.

Another route you could take is wage class 3. If you are a Dept. Coord
III, your job code is 12xx. That is the same job code as Project
Spec's. Anyway, Project Spec II and III are WC 3 (12a3 and 12a4, I
    believe).

    Good luck.

What do you mean by "off and on"? This might be taken by some hiring managers
as an indication of instability which could turn them off. Of course if it was
for good reasons such as maternity leave (I don't even know if you're female :-)
then that's a different matter. But it's probably still a good idea to focus on
overall accomplishments rather than the off and on aspects.

Good luck.
