	BOSTON EARTH DAY -- Digits Want To Be There


International Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, 1990, culminates a week
and begins a decade of activity with the purpose of calling
attention to the need for environmental action by politicians,
industry and the public.  It is meant to be a long-lasting and
meaningful event and will include a "Green Pledge" consisting of
four specific points which all are encouraged to sign and return. 

There will be many activities including exhibits, major
environmental and political speakers (including Senator John Kerry)
and a concert with MAJOR name entertainment including Arlo Guthrie, 
Tom Rush, Livingston Taylor, the Del Fuegos, Phoebe Snow, Treat Her 
Right, and more.

We all have an Earth Day opportunity to re-discover the fascination
of cycling while also promoting its environmental and health
benefits.  Please help us make a significant and visible impact.  If
you've been seeking a time to re-experience the bicycle, this is it!

A number of Boston area bicycle clubs have organized "spoke" bike
rides to and from the Boston events -- one of these rides is
probably convenient to where you live.  All rides have continual
starting times between 9:00 and 11:00 a.m.  Distances are about 8 to
12 miles each way -- about an hour of riding time; riding at your
own pace is encouraged.  Maps and instructions will be available at
the ride starting locations (and in the Boston Globe Calendar
Magazine on April 19). 

The following starting points have been designated (feel free to
cycle to the start or to join in along the route depending upon your
ability): 

    o	Revere (North end of Revere Beach parking lot)
    o	Stoneham (Stone Zoo Parking Lot)
    o	Lexington (Battle Green, Mass. Ave. and Bedford St.)
    o	Newton (Commonwealth Ave at Homer St. near City Hall)
    o	Dedham (High St. parking lot at Dedham Center)
    o	Milton (Houghton Pond parking lot at Blue Hills)
    o	Quincy Center (Hancock St. in front of MBTA Station)

All inbound rides will route to the main event on the Boston
Esplanade.   The Dedham, Milton and Quincy inbound rides will allow
the option of stopping at Franklin Park for opening ceremonies with
a continuing ride to the Esplanade. 

Provisions for secured bike parking at the Esplanade have been made,
but DO bring a lock.  Outbound rides will get under way well before
dark.  A helmet is always recommended, bike lighting is suggested
just in case, and wear "environmental green" if you can. 

The sponsoring cycling clubs are the Boston Area Bicycle Coalition,
The Charles River Wheelmen, and the Greater Boston Council of
American Youth Hostels.  These non-profit organizations sponsor
various cycling related programs including rides, safety and
advocacy.  Information and knowledgeable members will be available
at ride starting locations and at the Esplanade.

The Boston Earth Day Organization is having a volunteer meeting this 
Saturday morning, April 7.  If you might like to help out with the 
April 22 event, please call the Boston Earth Day office at
617/542-6333.  The meeting is at the Cabot Auditorium, 5 Joy St, 
Boston at 10:00.

Your help sure will be appreciated.  There is a lot to do to make 
this event the success we all want it to be.

  Yes. There will be an Earth Day event (lectures, concerts, exhibits, etc.)
at Institute Park on Park Ave. on Sunday afternoon. Probably much smaller
than the Boston event, but easier to get to for most DECcies in Mass. Unfor-
tunately there is no contact person in DEC for this one, as far as I know.
