1067.0. "Dumped by Metpay" by LAGUNA::DERY_CH () Thu Mar 29 1990 21:48

I have insurance through Metpay for my cars and house.
Just got a notification in the mail that Metropolitan will
no longer offer homeowners insurance in the state of
California for various reasons. They did say they
would "attempt" to find another insurer who will offer
payroll deduction, but "strongly recommended" that we
find another insurer ourselves. I contacted Metropolitan
and was told that they could not recommend another insurance
company. I'm more than a little miffed at being left in
the cold like this, but my immediate concern is finding some
    homeowners coverage.

Anyone out there currently have homeowners insurance
through an insurance company that offers weekly payroll
deduction? I don't want to deal with annual premiums,
etc, and really like the convenience of payroll deductions,
even if the insurance costs a little more.

    Thanks for the help!

I do not pay my homeowner's insurance premiums through payroll
deductions. My insurance agent is my Son. I can't say what he
can do, but if you call him and tell him I referred you, he will
treat you honestly and be as helpful as he can. He is a
representative of Liberty Mutual and works in their Fresno office.
You may reach him using a (800) number, which I will supply if you
contact me directly. I'd put it here but don't think I should
use this media for advertising. DTN531-3767 or labc::mcclusky or

Cherie, do you have a loan on your home or do you own it outright?
If you have a loan, you can have it paid through them and it will be
accrued from your housepayment on a monthly basis. That's how most
    people I know do it.

    Bob,

We do not own the place we live in, we rent it. The coverage we
had from Metropolitan was for everything contained in the house, not
the structure itself (which is insured by the landlord). Met
called this policy a "homeowners" even though we do not own it.

Since Metropolitan got our business through its deal with DEC, and
since getting the discount and payroll deductions were a corporate
benefit, I would expect DEC to address the Met withdrawal. I've
sent mail to the highest-level personnel person I know for my
group, and I think other people should push on their personnel
groups to work with corporate personnel & benefits to
    find a replacement insurance company.

Not actually by choice. Lenders usually require that escrows be
established if you have less than 20% equity when the loan is approved.
And usually you can't back out unless you have an agreeable lender.
This issues has sparked hot debate in congress because of pending
legislation requiring lenders to pay interest on the escrow impound
accounts. These accounts now hold billions of dollars and in most
cases provide a large sum of interest free deposits for banks (to
    buy junk bonds, etc.)

Well there is ONE good thing about the Peoples Republic of
Taxachusetts. Mortgage lenders have to pay 5% interest on the escrow
account if you live in Taxachusetts, even if the mortgage holder is
    outside of Taxachusetts.

I'm SICK of seeing "taxachusetts" plastered everywhere in this notes file.
Our share of just the S&L bailout alone is more than the whole state
budget deficit. To say nothing of "star wars".
So when there's no money left for our kids' education and repairing the bridges
before they collapse out from under our cars, don't blame it on the state.

Let's please leave the Massachusetts bashing out of here.

Could the moderators step in and demand an end to the gratuitous
Massachusetts-bashing? (And delete replies that don't comply?)

To the bashers: Please take such sniping, boasting about your state's
tax levels, etc., to a forum such as SOAPBOX. Those comments are
completely irrelevant to the DIGITAL conference and are (or should be)
inappropriate to the type of discussion carried out here. Andy (.8) is
not the only one annoyed by your attempts at wit.

Are you suggesting that any notes the poke fun of the land of Mike,
Teddy, and Tip be deleted? Does that mean all notes that include a
sarcastic permutation of the letters M-a-s-s-a-c-h-u-s-e-t-t-s or
are notes that refer to such things as "The People's Republic" even
though they do not contain direct references to MA included also?

Chill out you guys. "(And delete replies that don't comply?)" sounds
like pure censorship. If that is the prevailing opinion in MA then the
term "People's Republic" is completely deserved.

Ummmm...hate to be a killjoy, but does anyone have anything to
add to the subject of this note - California employees being
    dumped by Metpay?

Just to update, I have sent messages to my Personnel Rep who
has very nicely ignored my requests to look into this. I
    guess we're on our own.

It looks so far as though the folks being terminated for coverage by
METPAY are in Southern California. Has anyone outside of the greater
LA area been notified of such a termination of coverage?

1067.16No more Met in CALAGUNA::DERY_CHWed May 23 1990 16:3018

I called Metpay yesterday to find out the scoop. They are no
longer going to start new homeowners or auto policies in the
ENTIRE state of California. Any policies that you currently
have will be honored until the expiration date and will not
    be renewed.

You should've received a letter in the mail from Metropolitan
a couple months ago. At that time they had determined that they
would no longer carry automobile policies in the state of CA,
but were undecided about homeowners policies. They have since
decided to stop offering homeowners as well in CA.

If you need clarification I would strongly suggest you contact
    Metropolitan. The number is (800)422-4272.

True, I live in Northern California and my policy expires at
the end of October and will not be renewed. I've only made
one claim with Met in the 11 years I've been covered by them,
and they handled it well. Their rate was higher than most
in Colorado, but it was actually cheaper than what I've
found to replace them here in California.

I got a few letters from them, starting back in July I
believe. Going with Farmers now. They offer an alternative
to the payroll deduction (at least here they do). They will
make an automatic withdrawal from your checking account on
a monthly basis. I have auto-deposit at my bank and now
I'm trying to find out if I can split accounts so Farmer's
has access only to the money due them.

    	Change is inevitable.
