949.0. "Why doesn't DEC advertise?" by COMET::LAFOREST () Thu Oct 05 1989 16:13

    I have been a DEC employee for close to ten years now and I have always
    been amazed that the company could grow and prosper even though there
    is an almost total lack of advertising. We do have good products and
    software but the average person does not know that Digital Equipment
    Corporation even exists. Sometimes when I tell people that I work for
    DEC they ask what the company does.

    My question is: Do you feel DEC would benefit by advertising on TV or
    in popular national magazines? Could advertising bolster the company
    and bring in business that IBM and others get simply because the
    customer doesn't know we exist?

    When times get tough, as they are right now, the more people that know
    about you and your product the better chance you have to make sales and
    grow as a company.

    I am very puzzled by the lack of advertising. Your opinions please!

949.1Short answer: we do advertiseCVG::THOMPSONMy friends call me AlfredThu Oct 05 1989 16:198
	I see Digital adds in Newsweek, US New & World Reports, and other
	print media all the time.

	A better place to talk about this is NODEMO::MARKETING. I believe
	there are already topics there about it. I seem to remember this
	coming up here before as well.

949.2Please continue this in NODEMO::MARKETINGDR::BLINNWhat's life to a man with widowed wife?Thu Oct 05 1989 18:0012
        Alfred is correct on both points. First, we *do* advertise.
        Second, discussion of where we advertise, whether we do the
        right kind of advertising, and why your Aunt May in Paducah
        doesn't recognize Digital's name has going on in MARKETING
        for a LONG time. Some of the people involved with Digital's
        advertising programs even participate from time to time.

        For that reason, PLEASE pursue this in the NODEMO::MARKETING
        conference.  This topic is write-locked.
