<< I think a frieze around Spit Brook would be a great idea! The buildings are
<< awfully bland looking, and the only bit of external artwork (the barcode)
<< was ruined when it was recoded.

You don't know how releived I was to read this. I was at Spit Brook
a few weeks ago and somehow the topic of the ZKO entry came up.
I mentioned that the black/white bars were ASCII code for something,
but that I had forgotten what it was.

Later, I stopped and copied down the code (top row only) and tried
to decode it, but it didn't seem to make any sense. I know I'm in
the minority because the way I used to work around Digital involved
knowledge of ASCII codes, but the burning questions now are:

What did it say BEFORE it was recoded?
What does it say now, and how is that coded?

It used to say

		digitalsoftwa
		reengineering

It now says
		customers win
		whenwedeliver

It was seven bit ASCII lower-case letter groups, with black meaning 1.

In the good old days, the sign was meant to say
"digital software engineering"; however, to make
it fit two lines, the sign was split to say
    	"digitalsoftwa"
    	"reengineering"
Hence various in-jokes about being a software re-
    engineer!!

Ghod knows what it says now -- probably
    "posted with authors permission"

It also used to be a hot orange (Chinese red) wall behind it.

I hate it that they painted the wall and changed the message.

    Re .1:

You have the old text correct, but the new text is actually:

    	Customers Win
    	WhenWeDeliver

I collected over a hundred (about two hundred?) signatures to have the
bars restored to the old text, citing several reasons. (It would have
required changing the color of only one bar; the rest could be
    rearranged.) Management refused.

If you want the orange wall back, you have to lobby the documentation
group. Clearly the wall is being repainted to match the color of the
    binders.

936.8Bar codes???PROXY::PATHAKOk!With all things considered,it works..Sun Oct 01 1989 19:3412
Since there is some discussion on ASCII and Bar codes, thought I might slip
this one in.

How do we interpret bar codes?

I know they are implemented in different ways based on the application
(Post office, packed groceries, tinned products, etc.)

What are the rules?

thanks,
Lalit
936.9not that kind of barcode!ZPOSWS::HWCHOYI play DECweb, TRUST ME :?)Sun Oct 01 1989 23:485
this refers to metal bars (in black and white) representing binary 1
and 0. Not the kind of barcode you get stuck to your groceries.
