                   Digital Equipment Afternoon at WGBH

Once again this year WGBH has invited the employees
of Digital Equipment Corp to participate in the WGBH
Summer Fund Raiser. This year we have been invited to
answer phones during a live session from 3:00 to 7:00
         on Saturday afternoon, 26 August.

There are only 60 seats available this year. So
participation will be limited to the first 60
individuals that will sign-up. Additional spots may be
available on other days or at other times, but this
will be the only "all DIGITAL" event.

DEC will be prominently mentioned and there is even a
chance that you will be on TV.

The session will take place at the WGBH studios in
         Boston.

If you are interested in participating in this event,
please send mail to CRBOSS::PIERPONT or Howard Pierpont

This Saturday, August 26, will be "Digital Day at WGBH-TV". Fellow DEC
employees will be at the WGBH (Boston, Channel 2) studios, answering the
phones to take pledges of support for WGBH and public television.

You are invited to tune in and to call in your pledge of any amount - Digital
will match gifts over $15.

The hours we'll be there are from 3:00PM to 7:00PM. The programming for
that period will be:

3:05 John Wayne in "Standing Tall"
    	  4:30 Great Moments from NOVA
6:30 NOVA: The Miracle of Life

There will be lots of on-air mention of Digital and lots of shots
of the DEC people taking pledges. Tune in and perhaps see a familiar face!

Please help make this pledge drive a success for WGBH, which produces many
of the best public TV programs. And when you do call, be sure to say
you're from Digital. We'll look forward to hearing from you.

Once again, WGBH has invited the employees
of Digital Equipment Corp to participate in the WGBH

meet other folks from both DIGITAL and COGNOS.

This time we will be joined by COGNOS Corporation.
COGNOS is a DIGITAL Cooperative Marketing Partner. This

877.5My experienceSMAUG::GARRODAn Englishman's mind works best when it is almost too lateTue Aug 21 1990 01:1665
I was one of the ones that volunteered for this and I was busily
answering the phones on Saturday night from 7pm to 11pm. I had
a really fun evening and I highly recommend the experience to others.

The feeling of doing something for a cause that you truly believe in
    is wonderful to behold.

The staff at WGBH treat you really well. We were given a sandwich
dinner and between pledge breaks we were shown around the WGBH studios.
It was interesting seeing the set for the 10 o'clock news.

On the phones you get to talk to all sorts of people and it is really
pleasing to hear the appreciation for the programming.

The pledge breaks were pretty busy on Saturday night because there was
a good line up of programs:

    	- Miracle of Life
    	- Gracelands
    	- Simon and Garfuncle
    	- Pavarotti

There are about 50 phones there, each phone numbered from 1-50. Phone 1
will ring and then if another call comes in and phone n-1 is busy
phone n will ring. After all phones all busy the calls go to an
answering machine. It's fun to stand around phone 1 between the pledge
breaks because there are hardy any calls then. Phone 1 gets all the
    calls like:

    	- Why are you showing 'Miracle of Life'. This is disgusting?
    	- Why is Pavarotti running late (interestingly enough I heard
the answer to that later from someone in the control room. Apparently
an earlier program on 44 was really a 2 hour program and someone
had mistakenly scheduled it as a 1 hour program). A mistake like
    	  that is apparently pretty rare.
    	- When are you showing Gracelands again?

Regarding the 'Miracle of Life'. WGBH always shows this at pledge time
it is always a hit. A took a load of calls where the callers were
really enthusiastic about it. Pledges for $100 in order to get the
video come in like hot cakes.

Sometimes of course the poor person on Phone 1 has to end up handing
off the call to one of the professionals there if they won't accept the
answer, "call the customer service phone number during the week"

The most amusing call all evening was a lady who phoned in a $35 charge
    pledge.
Well later her husband came home drunk and was all bent out of shape
about the use of the credit card. This ended up being handled by
the 'Money Man' who eventually found the charge slip but it had already
gone to the bank. I think the end result was that the guy ended up
allowing the charge to stand rather than insisting on a refund.

It's amazing, as soon as a pledge break comes up on Channel 2 or
Channel 44 (you have a sheet so you know exactly when they are, and
they make sure everybody is back in the studios for the breaks)
all the phones very quickly become busy. And you are literally taking
one pledge after another for about 10 minutes.

The station gives you training beforehand explaining what to
ask etc. In summary I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and recommend the
    experience to everyone.

877.6Obscene Pledge Night...MORO::NEWELL_JOJodi Newell - Irvine, Calif.Tue Aug 21 1990 06:1024
Several years ago I helped out at pledge night for a Southern
California PBS station. David "Fight Back" Horowitz sat next
    to me the whole night.

During one of the pledge breaks, a local celebrity introduced
me and allowed me to "Challenge" all Digital employees to match
my pledge. Shortly after my introduction, the phone rang in
the front row (I was in the back), and the person who answered
the phone called up to me that this call was for me. I ran
down to the front, aware the camera was on me and politely took
the call thinking it *must* be a fellow Digit. Much to my dismay,
I quickly realized that it was not the kind of pledge I was
expecting. After a few provocative suggestions on his part, I
decided it was time to disconnect the line. I glanced up and I was
again on camera so I slipped my finger on the switch hook but
continued talking until the camera panned out and away. I hung up
and walked back to my seat.

When I returned, David Horowitz asked me if it was a friend. I
shook my head and told him I had just been a victim of an 'Obscene
Pledge'. We both had a good laugh and went back to answering
    phones.

Isn't this note against some sort of company policy? I mean, you're
soliciting for help in raising funds for a charity - namely, a
    TV channel.

I suspect this contravenes the "misuse of computers" rules.

I think not. WGBH is a company sponsored charity after all. Clearly
Digital conciders this sort of activity to be in their best interests.

of course. but i prefer not to label my wry statements with a

Then you could say that about al the organizations for which DEC matches gifts
of employees.

I give to both WGBH and 11 in NH, because I like Big Bird!

Sure, Digital matches ALL contributions (within set guidelines), but we also
actively fund some programming for WGBH-produced programs. [Yes, I know some
will say that's irrelevant or for other value than mere charity.] The bottom
line, I.M.H.O., is that even in tough times, I'm glad to belong to a company
that still has a sense of community responsibility.

When I worked for DEC in Massachusetts, I also volunteered to work the phones
one pledge night. One bit of information we learned was that Digital was
the largest single contributor to WGBH and that WGBH was the largest single
charity with Digital employees.

It was also fun to see the Mystery set from which Vincent Price held his
fireside introductions. It included a real working fireplace with a Rube
Goldberg-like large duct strung across the ceiling with an exhaust fan to
pump the smoke up the "flue".

RE: .8 - .10

The anti-solicitation policy specifically exempts from the policy those
charities, etc. for which solicitation is explicitly sanctioned by the
Corporation. United Way and the "Digital night at WGBH" are both covered by
that exemption.
