781.0. "Amateur Sports & Digital" by NTSC::MICKOL () Thu Apr 13 1989 17:44

Digital has long supported amateur sports through facilities improvements
(basketball hoops, baseball diamonds, volleyball courts, etc.) and funding for
leagues and clubs via employee activities. As the company tightens its belt,
we're seeing less funding from employee activities.

I am a founder and past president of the Digital Volleyball League based in
Hudson, Mass (but with participants from all over Digital/New England). We
used to play informally at the Boylston Sales Training Center (until they
carpeted an entire gymnasium to make more offices). Our idea to start a league
a number of years ago (with a handful of people) has grown into an 18 team
league and hundreds of Digital players and spouses utilizing 6 courts each
wednesday night.

I know there are many other leagues and clubs within Digital and I think its
important that they continue. The challenge is to continue to highlight the
positive aspects of these programs; how they benefit Digital in some fairly
intangible ways: team spirit, healthy competitiveness, communication, mental
relaxation, valuing differences, exercise, etc. How can we convince the
beancounters that these programs are important to Digital's future?

I have also seen Corporate Challenge tournaments on ESPN with companies like
IBM, HP, etc. I have never seen Digital participate in any of these. Anyone
know why? This would give us some fairly inexpensive visibility and certainly
raise morale for our cable-ready employee population.

Making noise really helps. Start a letter-writing campaign. Your personnel
rep might be able to point you to the right people to write to.

DEC participates in a lot of Corporate Challenge type things. I
know I'm constantly reading in DEC publications about this Corporate
Challenge race or that event and what people from DEC are involved.
Perhaps the DEC running club has more information on that as most of
the events I've read about have been running events. See
    NAC::RUNNING_CLUB for more information.

While visting in England a few years ago, I played in a Saturday afternoon
soccer game. The games were all for Digit's (as I recall) but
apparently there were leagues and games against non-DECcies as well.

Maybe someone from across the pond could update this info.

The closest I've seen us come (in sports I'm familiar with) to a Corporate
Challenge competition is something we started doing last year in the Digital
Volleyball League: The Annual Digital/Honeywell All-Star Volleyball
Tournament. We had one last year and it was a lot of fun (Digital won 8-4).
This year's tournament is next monday, April 24th, at the Hudson, Mass High
School from 6-10 pm. Everyone is welcome to come and watch.

It would be nice to get some inter-company leagues going. I know there was an
Ultimate Frisbee League a few years back (don't know if its still in
existence) that had teams from a number of high-tech companies.

Are there any other inter-company sporting events that anyone is aware of?

Here in Los Angeles we have a Coed-Computer-Softball League.
The teams consist of Digital, Data General, Concurrent (used to
be Perkin Elmer), Wang and this year IBM. This league was started
approx 8-9 years ago by myself and a lady from DG. We have lots of
fun. Once a week league games and then sometimes on a weekend.
We follow softball rules (and of course we did change some-just to
insure no one gets hurt and the game stays fun), and have playoffs and
    trophies and lots of Pizza.

And the Western Area, at least that portion in the San Francisco Bay
Area, San Francisco,Santa Clara Commercial and Santa Clara Government
Districts, participate in the Corporate Ski Challenge at Lake Tahoe.
For more information you might contact either Ray or Cindy Coutermarsh.

Next week our office will participate in a city-wide Corporate
Challenge event that will include companies like AT&T, IBM, many
local Banks, etc. We first entered it last year and found it to
be great fun. Events include co-ed softball, bowling, volleyball,
tennis, basketball, & several others. Each company fields as many
teams in as many events as they can. I don't believe there's any
media coverage though. Sure is a lot fun...

Digital is also a major sponsor of the corporate ski challenge, to the
point that all the competitors vests say digital on the bottom. Quite
fun to see all the Sun, Apollo, and HP types wearing our advertising.
(last year, in fact the Sun/HP types taped over the digital logo)
(I also think the sponsorship comes only from Western Area funds)

Haven't heard how well we did this year.

With regard to the Digital logo, I understand that it cannot be
placed on certain items without some groups permission.

Is this true of items like T-Shirts and such used for sporting events.
For example, if I decided to have some kind of volleyball competition
with Digital people on one side, can I just go to the local T-Shirt
shop and get T-Shirts with Digital logos? Or, do I have to get
the permission of someone in corporate?

Officially, you have to get permission.

But you know what Grace Hopper says ...

There's a standard on what you can an can't do with the logo...
I think standards are on VTX now, or at least that's what they
threatened with the last copy of one of the updates to certain things,
so you can probably check it out with a little work.

The logo is very important to us, and deserves to be
      - protected with care to maintain it's status as a trademark
      - used proudly and often.
After all, it means 'us' and all our collective effort, skill and
    value.

781.12Probably safer to get permission on this one..DR::BLINNDon't panic!Fri Apr 28 1989 21:1911
RE: .9 -- As suggested, you can do almost anything you like.
It's unlikely that a local T-shirt shop would question your
request to silk-screen the Digital logo onto shirts for your
team. HOWEVER, if anyone decided to complain, technically
Digital has to follow up and give you a hard time. It would
be better to get permission first. I know that the Employee
Activities committee in Merrimack/Southern NH has obtained
the permission, but I can't tell you who they got it from.
Do you have an employee activities person in your group/area?

I will have to look into that Tom. In this case "The right thing"
appears to be to get the proper permission.

    Thanks all,

Digital has both Men's and Women's soccer teams playing in corporate leagues
in the Greater Maynard area. However we were unable to get funds to go to the
corporate world cup games in LA. :-(
