720.0. "Management Internship Program?" by ODIXIE::RIDGWAY (For one brief shining moment) Tue Feb 07 1989 15:03

In note 719 there was a question concerning a marketing internship
program. I have heard that there is also a management internship
program, but it has been suspended for the next 2 quarters.

Does anyone know of this program? It's designed to take people
from the field and train them to be managers (eventually.) There
are also supposed to be two tracks. One for more experienced managers
to hone their skills, the other is for people who have no "real
    life" management experience.

    Thx, Keith R>

720.1I've got an extra copy of the assessment center workbook...YUPPIE::COLEThe TOUGH survive the bleeding edge!Tue Feb 07 1989 16:2114
You are thinking of the "Management Development Program", Keith. It
is not an "internship", but a purely course/seminar/workshop curriculum. It
was developed by SWS to meet its needs, but has been adopted by most all field
organizations now, I think. It has three levels, according to your management
experience. The lowest level also has an "assessment center" where an attendee
has a intense day of "role-playing" observed by a professional management
trainer who then writes up an evaluation for them and their manager. The
further course work over and above the "core" courses are determined by the
attendee and the manager based on the evaluation.

Completion of MDP is NOT a prereq for management, yet, but as the pool
of graduates increases, it may become so! The curtailment of any more SWS
"entrants" in MDP for this FY is financially driven. FWIW, I've been
cancelled out of MDP twice this year, now!

I was part of a Management Intern program through Northeastern
University, Boston, MA, USA (for our International noters) in
1981. As part of their MBA program, they have students get "real"
jobs in business for 6 mos. of their 2 year full time program.

I worked at the Mill, but that experience did not help me get into
    DEC upon graduation.

I am not sure if DEC still accepts Management Interns from N U or
    any other college or university.
