250.0. "100,000 employees" by MORRIS::MORRISON (Bob M. LMO2/O24 296-5357) Thu Jan 15 1987 16:03

According to Ken Olsen's New Year's message, we have over 100,000
employees. Does anyone know when we reached this point? This is
the first time I have seen this figure.

Well, I have seen several 202,000 badge numbers recently.

Remember, Ken Olsen was once asked how many people worked at
        Digital. His quick answer was...

        "Oh, about half"

The latest badge number is equal to the number of people who have
ever worked for DEC. So for everyone who has left the company there
is one still here, which is a fairly good retention rate.
I think there was a small ceremony when the first badge number
over 200,000 was assigned. I doubt that anyone got #200,000.

During the 1st week of Nov., 86, I was told at Corp. we had
just past 99,000. We must have passed 100,000 over Christmas?

My understanding is that blocks of badge numbers are release to
the different areas. Therefore not all the numbers between n and
    200,000 are in use.

When I came to DEC, three months ago, I was issued a badge with
a 182nnn number. People at this site who have been here for a year
    have 189nnn.

There are now so many employees that there is another "John Covert" now who has
a badge number of 209xxx (almost five times my badge number).

250.8Will The Real John Covert Please Come Forward?MAUDIB::KEMERERSr. Sys. Sfw. Spec.(8,16,32,36 bits)Mon Jan 19 1987 02:059
The real question is: How do WE know which John Covert is inputting
to this conference?? Nodename::username doesn't prove much.

Just a thought....(no offense John, whichever one you are)

    Smiling the whole time.....

There can only be one Nodename "COVERT::", maybe John should set
    his LOGMAX to 1. :-)

But seriously, isn't critical mass for John Coverts 2? Just to be
safe, the Johns should always keep fair distance, or at least use
lead shields. We don't need any accidents...

    Speaking as a co-moderator, I think we've had a reasonable amount
of fun with Covert jokes (although John may have tired of it earlier
then I did). Let's stick to the subject and not pick on anyone.

Looks like the 100,000 milestone will be reached again...this time
going in the opposite direction! Boy have things changed since this
    topic was started.

Yup, it's like reading the Old Farmer's Almanac in the autumn and noticing
that there is the same amount of daylight on October 12 as there is on
March 1 (roughly, I'm not looking at it now!). But the trees look
different, the weather is different, and you're heading for the coldest
    time of the year.

BUT in the almanac, there is always another spring! Perhaps here some
    day too.
