125.0. "Aerobics Programs at DEC" by LATOUR::SMURPHY (Sara Murphy) Sat May 24 1986 17:15

I'd like to open discussion about the exercise programs that are offered at
the various DEC facilities.

Here in MRO (Marlboro, MA) we have had an aerobics program for over a year.
There is an "aerobics room", and mens and womens locker rooms with showers.
Classes are offered at 7:00 AM, 11:00 AM, 12:00PM, 4:00PM, and 5:00 PM.
There is a fee, but it's a real bargain:  $45 for 3-days a week for 10 wks;
$35 for 2-days/wk. The program was started by a group of employees who
worked for many months to make it happen. DEC paid for construction of
the facilties. The program is run by an outside vendor (Body Unlimited
of Hudson) and is now administered by the employee services group in MRO.
Employee services is currently accepting applications for the next session
which will start on June 23.

I've been delighted with the program myself. It's very convenient and a great
stress-reliever in the middle of the day. (Are there any stress-free jobs at
DEC?)

I've heard that similar programs have been starting up at other plants,
but don't know any details.

    I think that's terrific!

LTN had a similar program a year or so ago--my wife participated.
I recall TWO having a similar program six years ago. Both facilities
are moderate size (under 500 people). I believe it is mostly a function
of getting enough interested employees to reach critical mass, and
someone interested enough to organize and manage the events.

Re .0. Is there any way of 'franchising' this program? I mean,
could there be copies of the tape sent to other facilities? We
have had aerobics here in CX, but at only one time. It would be
nice to have several different times available (one even later too).

I think that a taped version of the program would be inferior to the live
version, but I suppose it might be possible. Body Unlimited does sell
exercise tapes (of course, so do Jane Fonda etc..)

One of the strong points of the program is the sensitivity that the instructors
have for the people in the classes. They know which individuals have bad
knees, back problems, etc and give them modified instructions. They also
watch for common errors like arched backs that can lead to injuries.

The instructors are also very good at promoting a sense of fun and
camaraderie in the group. Laurel Kinzelman, the owner of Body Unlimited,
is particularly good at this. She maintains a running dialog with the
class members throughout each session, and seems to have an endless supply of
jokes, hacks, and shaggy dog stories. While some of this would come
through on tape, I think it would probably lose a lot in the translation.

125.5MILLRATS NEED EXCERSISE TOO!KIRK::ALGERWed Sep 24 1986 16:094
IT WOULD BE GREAT IF THE MILL HAD AN EXCERSISE CLASS!
CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW TO GET IT STARTED?

About 1 yr. or so ago, there was a lunchtime seminar here in the
Mill. Mill Health Services then looked into potential instructors
and put together a proposal for the Mill site and also (supposedly)
the Corporate level was looking into such a program. The last I
heard is that the thing that stopped it was that no group within
DEC was willing to fund it!! I enjoyed the lunchtime seminar SO
much that I would also be interested in seeing one here at the Mill
(especially since I now know that it has worked at other DEC
facilities). I know there are ones locally in Adult Ed classes,
however I'd rather not be the only guy in the class as is the case
with most of the Adult Ed courses!! I suggest you try talking to
our Health Services people on 5-3 and see where things stand.

Stow has an on-going program, with both noon-time and (I think still)
evening sessions of Jazzaerobics and "heartbeat" (for the
uncoordinated). I'd suggest that you Mill-folk contact the Health
Services office here at Stow and talk to them about the arrangements
    for this facility.

DEC used to subsidize this program until Q1, and then quit. The
price went up, but the facility space is still available, and the
classes are given if there is a minimum number of people (20?) signed
up and PAID. I think the rates here are the same as mentioned in
    an earlier note on MRO.

    GOOD LUCK!

Start at MLO3-B, near Bldg. 12. Go to MLO5-5.

If that's not exercise enough, repeat!

Extra credit for not getting lost.

Hmm... I'd planned on using that or a similar route for my walking
    on bad weather days!

Like so: start at building 5-1 near the lower Thompson St. lot,
walk to the other end, up to 5-2 and back to lower Thompson end...

Noe we need to get mileages for different routes measured!

125.10Building 5 is bigREGENT::MINOWMartin Minow -- DECtalk EngineeringFri Sep 26 1986 20:179
Building 5 is slightly over one DECtape long.

(500 feet for those of you who are too young to remember.)

By the way, don't try to locate Building 3-B -- 3-1 is as
low as it gets.

Martin.
