104.0. "why leave DEC France to join Valbonne" by PRSIS3::DTL (have a look at RAINBW::ASKENET daily) Wed Apr 16 1986 05:52

I just learned why a DEC France employee has to give his/her dismissal
to join the Ferney-Voltaire subsidiary or Valbonne. Just because
these two subsidiaries are NOT DEC France subsidiaries, as I have been
told so often, but they are both a separate company, an SARL as we
say here (company with limited responsibility, which is the other
juridical structure for a company in France, with the SA, anonymous
[owners] company). So, for example, people working in Valbonne are
NOT paied by Digital France, are NOT in the DEC France employee file,
etc... I wonder why they are in the DEC France phonebook directory!?!

   Just for your information.

104.1It happens for P.R. tooFXENG1::DEANWed Apr 16 1986 13:5319
There was a similar procedure for transferring to the DEC plant
in San German Puerto Rico. I found out after transferring there
in 1972. I was naive and didn't notice what was happening at
the time. After spending 2 years there I transferred back and
was treated as a new hire complete with new badge number. I
didn't think much about it until my 5 year aniversary came and
no notification of extra vacation time. I called personnel and
set the record straight, I thought. On my next transfer personnel
asked again what my start date was, I had since gotten back my
original badge number but personnel didn't include any record of
my time before P.R. or my time spent there. I had to go through
everything again on my 10th aniversary. My 15th went fine so I
    hope it is finnaly straight.

It looks like Digital considers plants outside of the United
States to be different companies. If this is true, they should
make it clear to someone who is transferring.

Strange, I was originally hired by Digital in Sweden (as a "European",
rather than as a "transferred American"). When I moved to the USA
four years later, everything transferred smoothly.

Perhaps the problem is with the investment and corporate laws of
the specific countries. I.e, Digital may enjoy tax advantages
by keeping the French companies legally separate.

Martin.

104.3All is not french, that is in FranceBISTRO::LIRONroger liron @VBOThu Apr 17 1986 06:529
Yes there probably are some fiscal/legal reasons.

Also Didier remember that both Ferney and Valbonne
functionnally are Area-level entities. As such they
    are subsidiaries of Geneva HQ.
The fact that they are located on the french territory does
not mean any special relationship with DEC France.
