36.0. "Engineering Guide abstracts" by PRSIS3::DTL () Mon May 20 1985 15:42

Did you read the first pages of the new Engineering guide 1985?

page xiii Preface

page xv Foreword:

"However menial and trivial your early assignments may appear, give them your
best efforts."

"There is always a premium upon the ability to get things done."
[listen to this one:]

This is a quality which may be achieved by various means under
different circumstances. Specific aspects will be elaborated in
some of the succeeding items. It can probably be reduced, however,
to a combination of three basis characteristics:

o Energy, which is expressed in initiative to start things and
aggressivenesss to keep them moving briskly.
o Resourcefulness or ingenuity, ie the faculty for finding ways
	  to accomplish the desired result.
o Persistence (tenacity), which is the disposition to persevere
in spite of difficulties, discouragement or indifference.

"In carrying out a project, do not wait for managers, vendors and others,
to deliver the goods; go after them and keep after them."

"Confirm your instructions and the other person's commitments in writing."

"When sent out on any complaint or other assignment, stick with it and see
it through to a successful finish."

"Avoid the very appearacnce of vacillation."

"Don't be timid - speak up - express yourself and promote your ideas."
[another good one:]

(...) Too many people seem to think that their job is simply to do
what they are told to do, along the lines laid down by the boss.
Of course there are times when it is very wise and prudent to
keep your mouth shut, but, as a rule, it pays to express your point
of view whenever you can contribute something (...)

"Before asking for approval of any major action, have a definite plan and
program worked out to support it."

"Strive for conciseness and clarity in oral and written reports."

"Be extremely careful of the accuracy of your statements."

"Every manager must know what's going on in his or her bailiwick."

"Do not overlook the fact that you're working for your boss."

"Be as particular as you can in the selection of your boss."

"One of the first things you owe your boss is to keep him or her informed
of all significant development."

"Whatever the boss wants done takes top priority."

"Do not be anxious to follow the boss's lead."

"In all transactions be careful to 'deal in' everyone who has a right to
be in."

"Be careful about whom you mark for copies, letters or memos, etc.. when
the interests of other departments are involved."

"Promises, schedules and estimates are necessary and important instruments
in well ordered business."

"When you are dissatisfed with the services of another section, make your
complaints to the individual most directly responsible for the function
involved."

"In dealing with customers and outsiders, remember that you represent the
Company, ostensibly with full responsibility and authority."

"Regard your personal integrity as one of your most important assets."

Wow!

My actions, just went as following, before replying:

Notes> extract this_is_my_job.read_it

Mail to JOKUR::SIMONETTI and ask for a copy.

Print this_is_my_job.read_it

Stick the paper on my wall.

When everything wich I read in .0, will be practice and perfect, I will be
able to come into this file, and give advice to colleagues who need it.

Till then, I will try to make it better.

Thanks Didier and Olivier, for putting this here.
