    Intended Audience

This applies to all personnel working in the Computer Room.

Computer Room and its operations, is the I.S. Manager, Ian Gore.

    Computer Room Health & Safety

Upon entering the Computer Room, switch the Halon system to the manual
position for the whole time that anyone is in the room.
[A copy of the Halon switching procedures is attached.]

Observe and comply with Computer Room notices, they relate to safety
    and emergency procedures.

Note the location of fire and Halon call points, power shutdown and
door release buttons, and emergency exits in case you need to use them.
A dark and silent computer room after a failure can be dis-orienting!

Supervise visitors or un-trained personnel are at all times.

    Respond immediately to any alarms.

Report abnormal conditions promptly to Security or Property Management
& Services, as appropriate, for resolution.

Store items which are not in use, e.g. media and consumables, in racks
or cabinets away from operating equipment.

Don't dump rubbish, scrap equipment, parts, or cables boxes etc. in the
Computer Room. If you create rubbish, please arrange for its disposal.

Don't keep printer paper or cardboard boxes in the Computer Room as
storage of any combustible products greatly increases the fire risk.

Don't leave cables trailing along the floor, particularly across
gangways and exits. Install them properly, and safely.

    Lone Working

Never work alone in the Computer Room unless you are in regular contact
with someone else in the building who can check you're OK, particularly
if out of normal office hours. If you have no-one working with you,
then get Reception or Security to look after you.

Do not work alone AT ANY TIME on LIVE electrical equipment to carry out
servicing, repair, modification, test work or similar processes.

[NEWS item by Pauline Woodcock 19-JUL-1991, reproduced with permission]

This item is for everyone who uses the computer room
    -------------------------------------------------------------

This item is for everyone who uses the Computer Room - Please be aware
that this is in operation at the moment.

Please take time to read through this.

It is the responsibility of every employee to be familiar with the
procedure for operation of the computer room HALON system.

On entering the computer room, ensure that the HALON CONTROL SYSTEM is
set to manual, (AUTOMATIC LOCKED OFF). This is indicated by green
lights on the panel. The panel is situated to the right of the doors.

When exiting the computer room, check to see if you are the last person
out of the room and, if so, turn the Halon system to AUTOMATIC
OPERATIVE which is indicated by amber lights.

DO NOT enter the computer room if the control panel is on red. This
indicates that HALON is being discharged.

    So,

if RED LIGHTS show on the Control Panel, DO NOT ENTER

if AMBER LIGHTS show, switch the key to AUTOMATIC LOCKED OFF before
    entering.

ONLY ENTER THE COMPUTER ROOM WHEN THE CONTROL PANEL LIGHTS ARE GREEN
    --------------------------------------------------------------------

This procedure is in line with Digital's policy on the use of Halon
systems. It is designed for your protection.

PLEASE FOLLOW THIS AT ALL TIMES
