50.0. "MODEM TOPICS" by KERNEL::MOUNTFORD () Thu Jul 13 1989 19:43

                            NEW RACAL MODEM SET UPS
                            _______________________

	The good old faithfull Racal MPS1222 modem is being replaced by a new
Racal VI1222PA modem. The new modem is now available from logistics, and is
likely to be seen in the field very shortly. The following message is being
sent to the Field so that the Installing Engineer can set it up as required
by RDC.

	I have one Modem that you are welcome to inspect at any time. I would
like everyone to see this Modem ASAP, so that when the Field ring in, you will
know what they are on about.

Cheers Pete

	The Racal MPS1222 modem that has been installed by DEC on customers
sites for Remote Access by the RDC is being replaced by a Racal VI1222PA modem.
	This document should enable the person installing the modem to set
it up so that it is suitable for use as an RD dial in modem.

	1) The Modem connects to the telephone line by means of a B.T. Newplan
plug. A spare socket is incorpoated into the plug to take the telephone
connection.

	2) Power up the modem. The LCD front panel will display the following
messages.

	POWER ON, WAIT then IDLE.

	3) Now operate the following key sequence, which will set Option 2 to 3
Option 3 to 2, and Option 19 to 3, then call the RDC for a link check.

	Key to operate.       Display.
        ---------------       --------

	      0               OPTION:
	      2                 2
	    Enter             OP 02*1
	      3               OP 02*3
	    Enter             OPTION:
	      3                 3
            Enter             OP 03*1
              2               OP 03*2
            Enter             OPTION:
	     19	                19
            Enter             OP 19*1
	      3               OP 19*3
	    Enter             OPTION:
            Enter             RESET
                              IDLE

You must then depress the "answer" button twice within 1 second to display
auto..............

                   CORRECT CABLING FOR SCORPIO SYSTEMS.
	           ------------------------------------

	It has come to our attention that on several 8200/8300 sites
that the REMOTE SERVICES CONSOLE is being installed incorrectly by
field service.
	The symptons are that we connect ,with protocol, without problem
but get no response in "Trans" mode unless local copy is enabled.
	The problem is the cable to the console terminal and CPU
console terminal port are fitted to the wrong connectors.

Console terminal MUST go to RSC connector A1 use BC22F cable

CPU cons port MUST go to RSC connector A2 use BC22D cable

	Read the RSC Field Service Manual

	Merry Christmas,

50.2MODEM PART NUMBERS.KERNEL::MOUNTFORDThu Jul 13 1989 19:4719
                     USEFUL PART NUMBERS.
                     -------------------

Although the new VI1222-PA modem is electronically compatible with the
MPS1222, there are cabling differences which could cause problems when
trying to replace a faulty MPS1222 with a new type. The workaround to
this will be a small stock of MPS1222 held at Winnersh, so will have
to be ordered specially.

In case you've always wondered, the part numbers for both modems are:

		MPS1222		+L-13000
		VI1222-PA	+L-10561

    The Racal Vadic(new type) can be "factory reset" by setting option
    1 to 1.
    ie;
              O
              1
             <enter>
              1
             <enter>
             <enter>

    ...then set our required options as in first note.

    This will get the modem back to a known state if someone has been
    playing,in fact I usually get the engineer/customer to do this if
    we are experiencing connection problems.

			RACAL-VADIC VI1222PA MODEM

The advise in a memo sent out by Pete Alvis on this modem contained the
following:

1. The modem connects to the telephone line by means of a B.T. Newplan plug.
   A spare socket is incorporated into the plug to take the telephone.

2. Power up the modem. The LCD front panel will display the following messages.

		POWER ON, WAIT then IDLE

3. Now operate the following key sequence, which will set Option 2 to 3,
   Option 3 to 2, and Option 19 to 3, then call the RDC for a link check.

	Key to operate.		Display.
        ---------------		--------

	      0			OPTION:
	      2			   2
	   Enter		OP 02*1
	      3			OP 02*3
	   Enter		OPTION:
	      3			   3
	   Enter		OP 03*1
	      2			OP 03*2
	   Enter		OPTION:
	     19			  19
	   Enter		OP 19*1
	      3			OP 19*3
	   Enter		OPTION:
	   Enter		RESET
				IDLE

Any problems please call RDC.

I had a tele support call for an engineer that got a Modem Error printed on the
consol when he turned the key on MDS01 to REMOTE.

He had swapped the MDS01, MODEM and all cables. The engineer had done RD
installations before using MDS01 and the VI1222PA modem.

The fix appears to be the following.

at OPTION: press 1 and then ENTER, you will get a display of:

			OP 01*1		(Original Values Set)

			  or

			OP 01*2		(Original Values Changed)

Pressing 1 and then ENTER sets the original settings. This appeared to fix
his problem. I suggest reseting the original settings and then carrying out the
set ups listed above in Petes original memo if you encounter this problem.
