25.1nearly right!KERNEL::PETTETNorm Pettet CSC BasingstokeWed Apr 12 1989 17:496
    The VMS manuals are now updated to version 5.1. Unfortunately in
    the update they forgot to supply a ring binder for the 5.1 New
    Features,and Installation guide! So until the binder arrives I have
    put these 2 manuals with the Release notes

25.2The Library Lives!!KERNEL::CLARKTue Apr 18 1989 20:4510
    Hi folks!!.....
    	Remember the DRIVE working parties??? (THESUN::WORKING_PARTIES)
    Note 13 is the Library working party conference. There's nothing
    new about the library system. It's still struggling to establish
    its priority in the melting pot!! However, for those of you who
    have lost touch, there are fairly recent entries, which will bring
    you almost up to date. There are some additional items to be added
    relating to developments in the past month. I will attempt to add
    these to this conference as time permits.

			SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS LIBRARY
			========================

	The recent move of desks/cupboards within our group meant that our
	library cupboards were moved (only a little). I know that you have
	(I hope) re-discovered the library, however I thought it would be
	appropriate to mentioned a few points together with the physical
	position of our library.

PRINTSET DRAWER's
`````````````````
	a) The two Norm's have recently "savaged" the printsets in order
	   two remove multiply copies. This is not 100% complete, but has
	   reduced the quantity considerably.
	b) Vax printsets are in the top drawer, PDP and Misc. are in the
	   middle. The bottom drawer has a few that have not yet been sorted.
	c) Most printsets have a protective cover, however the labels on some
	   have fallen off (due to age); some have not yet had labels
	   attached.
	d) Printsets can be viewed from the front to the rear; each drawer
	   is divided into two halves.
CUPBOARD NUMBER 1
`````````````````
	a) The left-hand halve of this cupboard contains box files with PDP
	   related manuals/info. Numbers are in the 5000-5999 range.
	b) The right-hand halve of this cupboard contains box files/binders
	   with VAX related manuals/info. Numbers are in the range 8000-8284.

CUPBOARD NUMBER 2
`````````````````
	a) Both halves of this cupboard contain box files/binders with VAX
	   related manuals/info. Numbers are in the range 8285-8805.
	b) The right-hand halve of this cupboard contains the following:-
	   i) Five large blue binders containing mainly out-of-date info. The
	      one that is up-to-date is CLUSTER REV DOC K1.
	  ii) Three smaller blue binders containing Cluster Troubleshooting
	      Manuals (2 identical), also an OPTIONS LIST from PAULI.
	 iii) Four box files containing back numbers of DECSTUFF (note that
	      DECSTUFF dated JULY'89 will be the last to be distributed).
	  iv) Hardware and Software OPTIONS CATALOGUE dates OCT'88.
	   v) VAX DIAGNOSTIC DESIGN GUIDE and VAX DIAGNOSTIC SUPERVISOR
	      USER's GUIDE.
	  vi) DEC STD 032 ARCHITECTURE STANDARD MANUAL (low rev but useful).
	 vii) RSDS USER's MANUAL V1.3 and RDAT USER's MANUAL V1.0.
	c) On top of this cupboard there should be a comprehensive list of
	   the contents of all libraries (on a good day).
CUPBOARD NUMBER 3
`````````````````
	a) The left-hand halve of this cupboard contains PDP/VAX LOGIC,
	   PERIPHERAL, ARCHITECTURE etc hardware/software books. Also at the
	   bottom are three binders with MVE info.
	b) The right-hand halve of this cupboard contains spare box files and
	   junk (expansion space).

    Members of the Library Working Party,

    	Don't you think its about time we got together & discussed the
    current status in the Library re-organisation?. I've certainly got
    some points to raise and I know Dave Clark has as well. I suggest
    we get together in the next month.

25.5Library improvementKERNEL::BLANDtoward 2000 ...Tue May 22 1990 00:3015
    Hello folks,

    You may be pleased to know that the library listing (orange folder
    that sits on top of one of the library cabinets), has been updated
    such that all manuals in our library associated with VAX systems
    can now be found under "VAX". This should make it easier to find
    the manual that you are looking for. Note that POLARSTAR can now
    be found under "VAX 8820/30/40", NAUTILUS under "VAX 85/87/8800",
    VENUS under "VAX 8600/8650" etc. I have also included BI, CI & HSC
    manuals under the heading of "VAX", eg "VAX BI", "VAX CI", "VAX HSC".
    Note that the alpha options "BI", "CI", "HSC" follow the numeric
    options (DCL SORT).
    If you find any errors or want to suggest further improvements,
    then please let me know.
    				Cheers, Norman Bland
25.6Program to find Library ManualKERNEL::BLANDtoward 2000 ...Tue May 22 1990 00:349
    It's me again,

    I am working on a program that will enable you to find a the number
    of a library manual from your own terminal. The intention is that
    it should be used as an alternative to the listing in the orange
    folder, not as a replacement.

    Watch this space.
    				Cheers, Norman Bland
25.7look to the STARSKERNEL::PETTETNorm Pettet CSC BasingstokeTue May 22 1990 06:258
    Norm,

    	John Travell reformatted the library data 18 months ago!!! all
    it needs is ops-support (Dave Wheller I think) to run his program
    and then the library data will be accessable from STARS.
    See Dave Clark for more details.

    Cheers...the other Norm
25.8Why are we waiting (tra la la)KERNEL::BLANDtoward 2000 ...Wed May 23 1990 15:417
    Thanks Norm, I lost for words if this is the case. I do not understand
    that if we could have had this 18 months ago, why we are still waiting.
    I will still go ahead and do my thing; I have shown the idea to
    a few people within our group and have had a favourable response.
    One person actually commented, "thats better than STARS", or words
    to that effect.
    				Cheers, the other Norm
25.9PDP Library re-organisedKERNEL::BLANDtoward 2000 ...Sun May 12 1991 06:2542
    The PDP library has undergone a dramatic change. It is now organised in
    much the same way as the VAX library, namely:

    a) Manuals are grouped into categories.
    b) Categories have a number range of 50 (ample)

    All entries found in the library listing (orange folder), are in the
    format "PDP option/category". The following is an example:

    PDP 1104/1134
    PDP 1135/1140
    PDP BOX/POWER
    PDP 1170
    PDP MISC

    This format makes it easy to search the library listing. It also is
    useful for the LIBRARY search program that I have written. An example
    of using this is as follows:

    Type "F" at the first MENU and "PD" at the FIND MENU. Answer the
    question "PDP System or Option" with the category you require i.e.
    "1160" (note that all PDP systems do not have the "/" character).
    The question "PDP 1160 Manual Search Clue" can be defaulted with a
    carriage return. The following results will be obtained:

      OPTION               MANUAL/PRINTSET TITLE                  NUMBER
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    PDP 1160 CABINET & POWER SUPPLY MANUAL 05250
    PDP 1160       INSTALLATION & OPERATION MANUAL                05251
    PDP 1160       KU116-BB KU116-AB REFERENCE MANUAL             05252
    PDP 1160       KD11-K TECHNICAL MANUAL                        05253

    If however we do not default the question "PDP 1160 Manual Search Clue"
    but enter say "power", we get the following"

    OPTION               MANUAL/PRINTSET TITLE                  NUMBER
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------

    PDP 1160 CABINET & POWER SUPPLY MANUAL 05250
