744.0. "online error private" by NETRIX::"gea@opale.mln.dec.com" (gea@opale.mln.dec.com) Fri Jan 24 1997 11:59

Hello,

I have a disk in lsm that is in state "online error private".
(error shown by voldisk list)

On this single disk there is a volume, on top of it an advfs domain that
can't no loger be mounted.

Is it possible to recover from this situation?
Unix 4.0

This issue is urgent.

Thanks,
Gea 793-2240

    This usually means that the disk has experienced some I/O error while
    updating its configuration database. Were any errors recorded in the
    log? Also, could you provide more details about your configuration?
    The output from the following commands would help:

    	# volprint -ht
    	# voldisk list
    	# voldg list rootdg

744.3disk appears to be deadSMURF::SCHLOSSMon Jan 27 1997 15:4021
    The problem appears to be that disk rza11 is missing. Did it check-in
    at the last boot? What is its current status? Can you access it
    outside of LSM? If the disk really has suffered a hardware failure and
    the data on it no longer available you will need to replace the disk
    and restore the data from backups.

    On another note, your LSM configuration is less than optimal. You have
    a diskgroup with 10 disks and 11 configuration databases. For a
    diskgroup of this size, four dbs are sufficient. I would consider
    eliminating the config dbs on rza1, rza2, rza3, rza9, and rza10.
    The command to do this for rza1 would be:

    	voldisk moddb rza1 nconfig=0

    You would then substitute "rza1" with each of the other disks.

    I chose to eliminate the 'rza' disks because these had smaller private
    regions than the other disks. You may choose to eliminate the config
    dbs from other disks to spread the config dbs over multiple
    controllers. In no case do you need to have two copies of the db on a
    single disk.

You might run
sys_check to see what it tells you about this setup...
