789.0. "Replacing the root disks (RZ28 -> RZ29)" by NNTPD::"lebenderd@mail.dec.com" (David Lebender) Mon May 05 1997 11:35

Hi,

on a customer system the root disk is mirrored by LSM. The system disks (RZ28)

should be replaced by bigger once (RZ29). The size of the root, swap and usr
partition should be increased. Since the customer is running a critical
application the downtime of its system has to be minimized (If possible only
one reboot).

Is there any possibility to set up LSM-mirrored system disks but not using
at least one of this disk as system disk during the encapsulation? This would
allow us to set up the disks, bringing down the system for replacing the
disks and then boot the system from the new system disks immediately. If
anyone knows how this can be perforemed I would be grateful for some hints.

Before I would do this, I would remove the lsm mirrored disk and
then remove root from being under lsm control. Then I would add
the new disks on another location and do a vdump | vestore to one
of the disk to get the data over there. then I move the new disk
to the old root location and boot off of it, also replacing the old
mirror disk with the new blank one. Then I would redo lsm for root
mirror. THis will the the least painful way...

Disks have lsm metadata on it, so you just cant copy from one disk
    to another...
