746.0. "Compact disks with LSM??" by DYOSW5::WILDER (Does virtual reality get swapped?) Tue Jan 28 1997 22:31

Customer has several LSM stripped volumes, all raw partitions. During
the volume creation, some of the volumes were created with the wrong
size. To fix this, the customer deleted the volumes (no data on them at
the time) and then re-created the volume with the correct size. Then
they turned all the volumes over to drd services.

Now, when you look at the disks with LSM, all the disks have a couple
of empty places in them (where the old stripped volumes lived).

Question: Is there any way to "compact" the disks and make all the
unused space contiguous at the end of the disks?

    Thanks,

    /jim

If the unused space doesn't overlapped with the used space,
you can make a new subdisk where you want it and move the
volume's data to use that instead with volsd(8)'s "mv" option.

746.2Will LSM use space automatically??DYOSW5::WILDERDoes virtual reality get swapped?Wed Jan 29 1997 22:189
Well, some of the areas are rather small (only a few MB). Will LSM use
these spaces as I create more volumes, that is, if there are say 2
spaces of 50MB each, and I create a 100MB volume, will LSM take both
50MB spaces and create one 100MB volume for me?

    Thanks,
