Hello Geert,

It is not necessary (or possible) for you or the utility to
create directories in a local namespace. Directories to match
the prefixes in mcc_autoconfig_prefix.dat are only required when
using a DNS namespace.
However, you may still wish to use the default prefixes (or similar
ones) to organize registration in the local namespace of nodes found
by Autoconfiguration. If so, these prefixes will become part
of the full name of the entity as registered by Autoconfiguration.
As outlined in "Local Namespace Planning and the Autoconfiguration
Prefix File" on page 2-4 of the "DECmcc Autoconfiguration and
Autotopology Use" manual, one reason to use prefixes is to aviod
naming conflicts when registering an entity with the same name in
two different global classes. For example, once the entity foo
is registed as NODE4 'foo' it cannot be registered as SNMP 'foo'.
But if you use prefixes .dna_node. and .ip., the same entity
could be registered twice, once as NODE4 '.dna_node.foo' and
once as SNMP '.ip.foo'. (If you plan to run both IP and DECnet
Phase IV Autoconfiguration, you will likely run into this conflict
and should therefore use prefixes of some sort.)
Prefixes are recommended, but not required. If you feel you do
not need them, then edit mcc_autoconfig_prefix.dat to specify
"." as the prefix for any or all of the classes NODE4, SNMP and
DOMAIN. However, read the documentation mentioned above
before making this choice. Note that the documentation for
local namespaces is not the same as for DNS namespaces.

Autoconfiguration will create map files for all the domains
found during the discovery. These map files will be created
in the "working directory" for that run, and copied to MCC_MAPS
unless you answer "N" to the prompt "Type N to prevent copying
DECmcc Map files to MCC_MAPS". Once they are copied to MCC_MAPS,
they will be accessible through the DECmcc Iconic Map interface,
when you open a domain discovered by Autoconfiguration.
(Note, if you specify "MYDOMAIN" as the name of the domain
for Autoconfiguration to discover, and your prefix for DOMAIN
is ".domain.", you should specify ".domain.mydomain" when
you open the domain using the Iconic Map interface.)

Select "DECmcc DECnet Phase IV Autoconfiguration" from the
Applications menu. Answer the questions the utility asks.
These questions are described on pages 2-9 through 2-13 of
the DECmcc Autoconfiguration and Autotopology Use manual.
If in doubt, try choosing the defaults. In many cases you
can just type carriage return in response to prompts.
Be sure to make note of the "working directory" for the
run. This is the directory in which all Autoconfigruation
related files are created.
Chapter 4 of the manual gives information on how to continue
answering questions asked specifically by DECnet Phase IV
Autoconfiguration. Chapter 2 covers questions which are common
to both IP and DECnet Phase IV.
It sounds like you would want option "[1] All DECnet Phase IV nodes"
or "[2] All DECnet Phase IV nodes in selected area(s)". Option
[2] will yeild a more limited search but the search will complete
faster. You may wish to run [2] several times specifying different
areas rather than running [1] once.
Review Chapter 4 and try running the utility. Let us know
if you have any more questions.
Regards,
Ulla Figwer
