ULTRIX/SQL Retirement
Contacts: Kathy Appellof, DTN 548-8729, ZSO
Mark Silverberg, DTN 264-2269, TTB
Highlights:
o ULTRIX/SQL last order date: September 4, 1992
o ULTRIX/SQL last ship date: September 30, 1992
o ULTRIX/SQL Price File removal: September 4, 1992
o Cost-effective migration program available
Digital is announcing the retirement of ULTRIX/SQL effective with the release
of the ULTRIX V4.3 Operating System. Therefore, the ULTRIX/SQL license will
not be packaged with the ULTRIX V4.3 product, nor any subsequent versions.
Maintenance and support for ULTRIX/SQL will be provided until December 31,
1993.
Product Description:
ULTRIX/SQL is a full-featured RDBMS engine that is licensed at "no-charge"
with the ULTRIX Operating System on many VAX systems, and all RISC-based
DECstations and DECsystems. The Ingres V6.3 technology forms the basis for
the ULTRIX/SQL V2 product.
Migration Strategy:
Digital has negotiated a cost-effective migration program with the Ingres
Corp. that allows current ULTRIX customers to purchase a low-cost migration
kit for the native INGRES database. This migration program also includes a
cost-effective migration for the INGRES Application Development Tools.
ULTRIX/SQL customers who desire information on how to purchase the Ingres
migration kit as a replacement for ULTRIX/SQL can acquire sales and product
information by telephoning Ingres Corp. at 1-800-4INGRES.

RE: Ultrix/SQL will no longer ship with Ultrix, effective with Ultrix V4.3
Users of the DECmcc Historian/Exporter functions (ONLY) on ULTRIX (ONLY)
require ULTRIX/SQL. DECmcc will be adding the Ultrix/SQL database to it's
SSB shipping product for an interim period. The Specific Mcc kits
affected are the:
SPD# Model No. Short Descriptions MLP Price Adder
(2-5-2) Curve
DECmcc Basic (BMS) $12.5K C 25%
32.48.x QL-GU5A8-AA ult Management System
-----------
QA-GU5AA-H5 ult H-KIT $655
DECmcc Historical $2.5K A 35%
37.20.x QL-MDPA8-AA ult Data Package
-----------
QA-MDPAA-H5 H-KIT $390
Ultimately, (currently planned for V.next in Fall '93) the product will
incorporate generic SQL interfaces so that any SQL database could be used
with it. However, given the volume of work being requested for V.next, we
may implement this is several steps, with V.next supporting the use of
Oracle only, for example, in addition to the ULTRIX/SQL product.
For the V1.3 version of the above part numbers, the ULTRIX/SQL product
will be added to the NPF at the SSB, so that the V1.3 H-kits includes
the ULTRIX/SQL H-kits. There is no license or PAK for ULTRIX/SQL,
and the product installs without them. Mcc can include ULTRIX/SQL as Mcc
is referenced in the Amendment to the agreement with Ingress, giving
Mcc the rights to ship it free of charge to our customers thru
December 1993. Thus, no additional part numbers or fees must be
paid by Mcc customers in the V1.3 timeframe. The UPI for ULTRIX/SQL
is YHT, and the specific H-kit numbers to be included into our NPF are:
QAYHTABH5 - ULTRIX SQL U/R TK50
QAYHTABHM - ULTRIX SQL U/R 16MT9
The SPD, however, would be modified under the Growth Considerations
section, with the text below:
"NOTE: ULTRIX/SQL V2.0 HAS ENTERED PRODUCT PHASEDOWN. SUPPORT FOR ULTRIX/SQL
WILL BE DISCONTINUED AFTER DECEMBER 31, 1993."
Subsequently, in the V.next timeframe, an additional purchase of a database
would be necessary by Mcc customers wishing to use the Historian and
Exporter functions of Mcc. At this time, information would be added to the
SPD directing customers to use either: . Ingres database from Ingres
. Ingres database under Corp Reseller
program, specific to POLYCENTER
. Any other databases we've tested
with Mcc (minimum Oracle)
Is you have any further questions, let me know,
Gail

TOPIC TO Impact of ULTRIX/SQL retirement, licensing issues around
DISCUSS: ULTRIX V4.2/V4.3. Alternatives.
DISCUSSION: Much of the discussion evolved around why ULTRIX/SQL has
entered phasedown and alternative approaches that the dependent
layered product groups could follow.
Kathy Appellof pointed out that DECwest had taken reasonable
steps to identify all dependent layered product groups and
meet with them over the past year. Even then, there were two
"unidentified" products which did not receive notices. These
two were the DECathena and Polycenter Census product groups.
Groups present at this meeting had copies of the recent contract
amendment signed with Ingres which detailed support obligations
and the dependent layered product groups which had permission
to continue shipping ULTRIX/SQL media and documentation with
their product until product phasedown is complete in 12/93.
DECathena was able to obtain special Ingres permission to be
included; unfortunately, Ingres denied the Polycenter Census
request.
The Polycenter Census representative was highly concerned about
the potential $2M revenue stream impact of not supporting
ULTRIX/SQL. They felt that it would significantly impact cost
of ownership to their customer if forced to require full Ingres.
John Penney provided an accurate explanation of the difference
between ULTRIX/SQL and the Ingres database and asked that for
purposes of this discussion the two not get confused.
Gary Gottschalk highlighted the three options available:
1. ULTRIX V4.2 to be reactived to solve the operating system
licensing issue. This is not a valid or usable option
due to the contract amendment with Ingres.
2. Include ULTRIX/SQL part numbers in the dependent layered
product bill-of-materials. This is permissable only
for those product groups who have explicit permission
in the Ingres contract amendment.
3. Acquire the Ingres V6.4 database through a distribution
agreement (VAR).
ACTION ITEMS: 1. Kathy Appellof to publish meeting minutes, with joint review
and input from Jeanne Davis.
2. Kathy Appellof to include the TPframe SPD in the meeting
minutes as an example of describing product alterna-
tives.
3. Kathy Appellof to include the dependent layered product
notification note number 823.2 from the ULTRIX_SQL
notesfile in the meeting minutes.

DIGITAL INTEROFFICE MEMORANDUM
To: Distribution Date: July 28, 1992
From: Kathy Appellof, USSG Prod-
uct Management
LOC: ZSO
PHONE: dtn 548-8729:
Subject: ULTRIX/SQL Retirement - Dependent Layered Product Pro-
cess
The ULTRIX/SQL product phasedown (retirement) announcement has
been approved by PAC and is scheduled to occur with the announce-
ment of ULTRIX V4.3 on or about August 17. Customers who have an
ULTRIX support contract will be receiving notification (via di-
rect mailing) of the beginning of ULTRIX/SQL phasedown. All UL-
TRIX/SQL customers on support will be receiving details and pro-
motional literature on a program whereby they can purchase the
Ingres Intelligent Database for a 6 month period of time for ap-
proximately 40-60% discount.
The ULTRIX/SQL "no-charge" license included with the purchase of
the ULTRIX Operating System will no longer be available start-
ing with the ULTRIX V4.3 release. All outstanding orders for the
media and documentation kit will be filled through September 30.
Support for ULTRIX/SQL will be permanently discontinued as of De-
cember 31, 1993.
Because your product requires ULTRIX/SQL as a prerequisite, your
customers will be affected.
As of the last order date, which is currently estimated to be Au-
gust 31, the part numbers for the ULTRIX/SQL media & documenta-
tion kit (QA-YHT-A***) will be non-printing in the USLP. NOTE -
these part numbers will not be moved to permanent maintenance
until December 31, 1992, at which time you should have a contin-
gency plan to provide this prerequisite software to your customers.
One layered product group, for example, has chosen to package the
ULTRIX/SQL functionality as part of their distribution kit. The
ULTRIX/SQL engineering organization is willing to work with you
to provide the required software if you choose to bundle with your
kit. Until December 31, 1992, you will be able to provide your
customers with the necessary prerequisite software by using one
of the following options:
1. Specify the part number to order in your product's SPD. There
are four part numbers which can be provided to you.
2. Include the part number in your product's Bill-of-Materials.
Again, these can be provided to you.
Page 2
The phasedown notification letter will also be included in the
ULTRIX/SQL media and documentation kit after the release of UL-
TRIX V4.3. You will need to update the Software Prerequisites sec-
tion of your SPD. I've included suggested wording which you may
or may not choose to use.
1. The ULTRIX/SQL license is no longer available with ULTRIX V4.3.
Therefore, if you still have the dependency on this product,
you probably want to use the following:
o ULTRIX Operating System V4.3
o Ingres Intelligent Database V6.03 or above
Digital legal advises that customers cannot legally install the
ULTRIX/SQL software without the proper license, and since
ULTRIX V4.3 does not include the ULTRIX/SQL license, then
customers will be limited to Ingres, or to stay with ULTRIX
V4.2.
(NOTE: it is expected that many of your customers will be taking
advantage of the upgrade program and will be migrating to
Ingres)
2. If you feel that your product will continue to have a depen-
dency upon ULTRIX/SQL for a period of time, then you are lim-
ited to using the following language:
o ULTRIX Operating System V4.2, V4.2a, etc. (do not include
the words "or above")
o ULTRIX/SQL V2.0 It is probably a wise idea in this case
to specify that this product is in retirement to prepare
your customers for the change.
3. Optionally, you may want to include wording in the "Growth Con-
siderations" section of the SPD mentioning the beginning of
ULTRIX/SQL Phasedown. Legal has suggested that you may want
to include positive wording about ULTRIX V4.3 representing the
"next step in product development" and that customers are rec-
ommended to migrate to the "highly improved Ingres".
Finally, I'm sure that there will be questions. We'll try to an-
swer them as best as possible. Please contact one of the follow-
