3493.0. "Ultrix BMS functionality questions" by PCONE1::hampton () Tue Aug 04 1992 02:24

** DECmcc/Ultrix - details requested **

I have an RFI for a MCC station. The customer requests/demands UNIX.
I have a number of questions that I can't answer (probably because I
don't have the manuals or any experience with it!!!!

Your help is requested.

Backup/Archive:
It is easy/possible to archive and retrieve config, fault, performance,
config etc as a historical record AND be able to reload portions of
this as required. Would this involve multiple MIR's.

Import/Export of data:
What functions are provided under the Ultrix version. Does it use
Ingres. Can we get the info to ORACLE.

Fault management:
Can the Diagnostic assistance be automated on reciept of an Alarm.

Fault tracking:
Has anyone attempted connecting into a ticket system on Ultrix.

Performance:
Is there an LTM equivalent under DECmcc/Ultrix. The request is
for 'sniffer' functionality. A part of this is to have a 'meter'
        showing the realtime Ethernet utilisation

Response time:
The need is to be able to determine response times from different
parts of the network. This would generally be froma workstation or
Appletalk gateway (SNMP) to a VAX or Sequent host. Most of the
user complaints are 'the network is slow'. CAn response time tests
        be automated.

Configuration:
Will the Auto topology and config function assist if finding nodes
that are new, or have gone away. What is the performance impact.

I appreciate your help. We are up against the usual crowd of SUN, HP et al.

Would this involve multiple MIR's.

kjn>> I am not quite sure what you mean here. You certainly can record
kjn>> data and retrieve it for future use. This data is in the DECmcc MIR.
kjn>> We have no archiving facility right now (only purge).
kjn>> We recommend that you use the Export function to INGRES and then
kjn>> use the dbms facilities for archive and restore. Remember that
kjn>> once data is exported, it can not be imported back into the
kjn>> MIR.

Import/Export of data:
What functions are provided under the Ultrix version. Does it use
Ingres. Can we get the info to ORACLE.

kjn>> You can Export any (all) attribute partitions to INGRES. We do
kjn>> not support (with the V1.2 release) export to any other DBMS on
kjn>> ULTRIX. Since INGRES is an SQL database, the exported data can
kjn>> then be used with the reports package that comes with DECmcc or
kjn>> the user can optionally create reports, statistics of their own
kjn>> using the 4th generation tool of choice. As mentioned above,
kjn>> once data is exported, it cannot be imported.

Fault management:
Can the Diagnostic assistance be automated on reciept of an Alarm.

kjn>> The user can create an alarm rule that specifies the event name
kjn>> and a script to be run upon the receipt of the event. That
kjn>> script could certainly run DECmcc and cause the Diagnostic
kjn>> Assistant to execute and specified test.

Fault tracking:
Has anyone attempted connecting into a ticket system on Ultrix.

kjn>> We have not formally connected to any trouble ticket system.
kjn>> There is a group in Valbonne that is working on a DECmcc ticket
kjn>> system for the telecom environments.
kjn>> You may want to contact Claude Hary (Valbonne,FR) to get more
kjn>> information on the TeMIP trouble ticketing system.

Performance:
Is there an LTM equivalent under DECmcc/Ultrix. The request is
for 'sniffer' functionality. A part of this is to have a 'meter'
        showing the realtime Ethernet utilisation

kjn>> I know of no LTM equivalent within the DECmcc/ULTRIX program.

Response time:
The need is to be able to determine response times from different
parts of the network. This would generally be froma workstation or
Appletalk gateway (SNMP) to a VAX or Sequent host. Most of the
user complaints are 'the network is slow'. CAn response time tests
        be automated.

kjn>> This can be done. However, it requires some amount of
kjn>> programming to write an AM/FM that makes a call and calculates
kjn>> response time. Once this is done, it can be automated using the
kjn>> DECmcc Information Manager (part of the executive) as a
kjn>> scheduler. Or you can schedule using batch procedures.

Configuration:
Will the Auto topology and config function assist if finding nodes
that are new, or have gone away. What is the performance impact.

kjn>> Autotopology and Autoconfig do not currently support incremental
kjn>> discovery. These functions are planned but not yet committed to a
kjn>> particular release of DECmcc.

kjn>> You can write alarm rules to check on status and reachability of
kjn>> nodes. Running many alarm rules simultaneously does affect
kjn>> performance, but the addition of physical memory alleviates the
kjn>> problem.

I appreciate your help. We are up against the usual crowd of SUN, HP et al.
