3401.0. "IP autotopology - HOST ping only" by COLNSB::ANDRADE () Wed Jul 22 1992 09:45

    Question:

    Can I request that the IP autopology find HOSTS only, and use PING
    only to find them ?

    "option -p", since the routers at this customer don't talk SNMP
    is the only way left to find TCP/IP hosts. But the autotopology
    refuses to get that far, since it can't do anything else.

    I have tried a few things, and can't get it to do just this. It
    either quits when the gateway doesn't answer, or crashdumps when
    I give it the local hosts (instead of a gateway) address.

3401.1Is there one reachable host which talks SNMP?TOOK::FIGWERUlla Figwer LKG2-2/T2 x226-7858Wed Jul 22 1992 19:1436
	Hello Gil,

	To see hosts, you need to use the -h option. -h will find
 	hosts in addition to routers, etc. There is no option for
	"just hosts". The maps generated by Autoconfiguration can
	be adjusted "by hand" (using the Iconic Map interface),
	however, to reflect hosts only.

 	Yes, you are right. Option -p with -h will find hosts
	which do not necessarily talk SNMP.

	All you need is one host that talks SNMP. The software
	needs a place to start. Does your local host talk SNMP?

  	In place of the gateway in the .cf file, specify the address
	of your local host (if it talks SNMP) or a reachable host
	which talks SNMP, and let us know the results.

	Hope this helps.
