3333.0. "SNMP AM questions" by ANOSWS::COMFORT (Spent a little time on the hill) Thu Jul 09 1992 13:41

    Hi,

I'm looking for some answers to rudimentary questions on the SNMP
AM. First it seems that the "old" SNMP module required that every
SNMP entity got registered in the .MCC_IP DNS subdir. Is this the
case in the new version? When I installed MCCTCPIPDAT012, the
installation procedure asked me if I wanted to convert the IP names...
convert them to what? I tried to enter the full internet name,
but it didn't like that so I am assuming that one can now place
these entities in any subdir that one wants to. Is this correct?

I have also compiled and played with the Synoptics MIB as well as
accessing some of our IP portals and it seems that there is no way to
modify parameters on the target entity. For example, the IP portals
had a couple of bad static routing addresses in the routing tables and
I wanted to clear them out, but could not find a way to do this...
could someone comment on the amount of managability available with this
AM or what I don't understand about how to do these things.

    Thanks,

    Dave Comfort

	Dave,

SNMP AM V1.1 did not implement fullname support for
registration purposes, while V1.2 does. So if you are installing
V1.2 on a system which ran V1.1, you need to convert the existing
SNMP entities to make them compatible with the new version. If you
were running field test software (T1.2.X), then no such converion is
	required.

Regarding your second question, I would suggest looking in
the Synoptics mib and finding out if the IP portals are settable mib
variables. If they are, then there is no reason at all why you
will not be able to do sets on it using the SNMP AM. From my
own experience, most of the configuration stuff can only be set
directly from the console attached to the box.

Just a clarification: The TCPIP/SNMP Access Module is already
included in the BMS 1.2 kit. MCCTCPIPDA is the TCPIP Diagnostic
    Assistant FM.

	Robert,

What I really meant was that when you install BMS V1.2 on top of
V1.1, the SNMP registered names have to be converted via a utility
provided on the kit. However, I have never seen the question
(mentioned in .0) asked during the installation of TCPIP DA.

	RE .0

Can you post a log of the installation showing the question being
	asked?

    Sorry all,

My fault, my point and shoot skills need to be sharpened. I didn't
realize I had included the DA saveset name instead of the MCCBMST012.

I am really just looking for information regarding the use of full
Internet names, ie. PHMCC.SMITHKLINE.COM or DECUAC.DEC.COM, etc.
The BMS installation procedure looked in the MCC_IP directory and
found a SNMP V1.0 entity and wanted to convert it, but when I entered
the full name PHIP01.SMITHKLINE.COM, it did not like it. I do not
have a log (I have misplaced my installation session log).
