3306.0. "access module rumors or reality?" by COL01::LUNT () Fri Jul 03 1992 13:04

    Hello,

    	I have questions concerning two products that are suppose
    to have contracts with digital for Access modules.

    The first is the German Company Hirschmann for their star coupler ( in
    German the product is called "sternkoppler) management card "mike".
    This card is manageable via SNMP and will be available in August along
    with the private mib extensions. In addition there is suppose to
    be an Access Module available. Does anyone anywhere have any
    information about this Access Module, i.e. when will it be available,
    what it has for a graphical presentation, does it take full advantage
    of the "mike" card, or will the first release only contain partial
    management capabilities?

    The second is the "network quality analyzer" from Logic
    repllacement technology. This
    analyzer consists of an implant, and a computer interface.
    There is suppose to be an interface to the implant that
    doesn't have any unser interface and there are rumors that there is an access module
    being written that talks with this pod. This would be
    great. The implants are inexpensive, the pod costs about the same
    as bridge, and then one can physically manage ones network
    from DECmcc and not have to buy the expensive computer. Does
    anyone anywhere know about this?

    Thanks,

3306.2The Hirschmann story...BIKINI::KRAUSEEuropean NewProductEngineer for MCCMon Jul 06 1992 06:5026
    Sorry to correct you, Marc, but the name is Frank Zelibor @SUS (he
    is the sales person dealing with Hirschmann).

    I'm still involved in this long winded 'project' as a technical
    consultant (in fact it was my idea to develop an AM for the
    Hirschmann hub).

    Status as of today: There is NO specific access module for the
    Hirschmann hub. They payed for a pre-study that has been done by
    DEC's local engineering in Munich (thanks to Helmut Schimmel). Now
    they are negotiating who is going to pay how much for the actual
    development. Don't hold your breath, I don't expect development to
    start very soon.

    Now for the good news: Since Hirschmann's hub management card "MIKE"
    talks SNMP we can use the TCP/IP SNMP AM to manage the hub.
    Hirschmann provides their MIB extension in standard format which can
    be loaded into MCC. [They got some problems with table indexes and
    they try to blame MCC on this, but I will sort this out soon :-]

    If you have further technical questions, call me. If you have
    non-technical questions, call Frank.

    Regards,

    *Robert
3306.3any ideas on HP for Hirschmann?COL01::LUNTMon Jul 06 1992 12:0812
    Hi,

    	Thanks for the info. One question though, An AM is not
    going to be developed in the short run, but does anyone know
    how the HP-open View integration will be? A graphical picture or also
    only SNMP and standard icons?

    	I ask, because the MIKE card is being advertised as being
    managemable by both HP-Open View and DECmcc. It would be nice to
    be ahead of HP in a graphical interface to Hirschmann.

3306.4Annecy is working on the PODANNECY::KIRKHAMPete Kirkham @AEOTue Jul 07 1992 07:0812
    As far as I know the LRT system uses the same SINTROM POD that we are
    working on at the moment. This SINTROM (now called EIT) POD has an SNMP
    interface which we've tried but not yet really tested. If you want more
    details please contact me. We already have been offered a reasonable
    discount by EIT so if you want to buy one that would probably be
    worthwhile.

    Our aim is to integrate the POD into the DECmcc environment since
    although we can use the SNMP AM to get the data that doesn't help us
    when we want to display it in a meaniningful way.

3306.5HP-no, but MTI hasBIKINI::KRAUSEEuropean NewProductEngineer for MCCTue Jul 07 1992 08:0120
    HP has no graphical picture, either. But they do a better job on
    SNMP management in general. E.g. their 'Application Builder' allows
    to define arbitrary groups of variables that will be shown with one
    request. This is similar to MCC's attribute groups, but these are
    not easily user-definable.

    There IS a front panel view for the Hirschmann hub integrated into
    MTI's SNMP management product (I forgot the name- LANCE? LANNET?). I
    saw it at CeBIT this year, running on a SUN IPX.

    The only real step ahead that I can see at the moment is the
    Hirschmann AM. A few notes back Dominique Pacco described what he
    did for the Chipcom hub. This is exactly what I want to have for
    Hirschmann. If you have a strong business case (BAYER?) EIC may
    invest some money in the project.

    Let's keep in touch, maybe we can do something to speed up the
    process.

3306.6yes, a Hirschmann and other AM's are really neededCOL01::LUNTFri Jul 10 1992 12:2325
    Hello Robert,

    	yes, let's definitely keep in touch. BAYER will be evaluating
    network managment tools this fall. They will choose one
    tool for complete network management- SNA and DECnet/TCPIP world.
    They want to standardize the network management environment. SEcondly
    they then might choose a "subtool" if you will, to manage SNA and
    one to manage DECnet/TCPIP (the rest of the world ). Since we already
    are here with DECmcc, we have a good chance. Word is though, that in
    early fall HP will be demonstrating open view to BAYER. They may also
    look into other solutions.

    	We have probably 20 hirschmann hubs already installed. I hope
    that many, atleast the central hubs, will be outfitted with the MIKE
    card.

    	But the main reason that we need such AM's is to keep DECmcc as
    the standard here. And the better interfaces/AM's/FM's that we can
    provide, the better chance we will have. And provide on a timely
    basis.
