3298.0. "DECmcc Ultrix V1.2 Instal problems" by MUTTON::LAMB (Peter Lamb - GSG Santa Clara) Fri Jul 03 1992 01:24

I had a little extra time today so I thought I would install
the 1.2 version for Ultrix announced in note 3.166.

Unfortunatly, I ran into serious problems installing threads.

A copy of my installation errors follow.

Does anyone have any ideas what is wrong?

Thanks and regards,

Peter Lamb

    Hello Peter,

    Try installing the latest version of DECmcc BMS V1.2.0 on
    your system. I justed restored the kit from the mccbmsv120.tar
    file and installed DEC Threads and the BMS kit successfully.

    Remember to delete (setld -d) any old version of the DECmcc BMS
    kit and any old DEC Threads kit (CMA or THRBASE kit) prior to
    the installation. Although the THRBASE111 kit will install on top
    of old DEC Threads kits, you should still delete the old versions
    of DEC Threads or the DECmcc BMS kit will not allow its installation
    to continue.

I just used FTSV to copy the latest kit down from MCCNIX
and am still having the exact same problem. Could FTSV
be munging the file??

I am going to try dcp'ing the file directly again to see
whether that makes any difference.

3298.3Try ULTRIX -> ULTRIXTOOK::MINTZErik Mintz, dtn 226-5033Tue Jul 07 1992 04:055
People have reported mixed results when copying ULTRIX kits
through a VMS system. It is quite likely that that is what is
causing your checksum error.

Nope! I just tried it again with

dcp -iv mccnix::~ftp/pub/mccbmsv120.tar .

and am still having the same exact problem!!

3298.5Kits are known to workRACER::daveAhh, but fortunately, I have the key to escape reality.Tue Jul 07 1992 16:465
I copied all of the kits last night and installed them with no problem,
so the kits are known to be good. The last time I had problems like this
was with a bad block on my disk.

I guess I have a lot of bad blocks!!

I was finally able to get DECmcc ultrix installed on one of my systems...

Bob Harcopus (sp?) pointed me to another kit that I was able to copy down
the odd thing is that the network link was broken two thirds of the way
through copying this kit such that it was uncomplete however, I was able
to use this kit to install threads. I am now trying to install DECmcc on
another Ultrix system and am having the exact same problem... After my
link went down I re-copied the entire kit again and this is the kit I used
to install evertyhing except threads but when I copy this kit to another
system I get the exact same error.

3298.7Problem solvedPJWL::LAMBPeter Lamb - GSG Santa Clara MAIL=MUTTON::LAMBTue Jul 14 1992 14:3117
After much frustration and a great deal of assistance from Jim
Dougherty we finally figured it out!! My problems were two fold...

	1) Once a setld is corrupted you have to setld -d before
	   you attempt to reinstall it

	2) The threads kit uses /usr/kits so if you put the .tar
	   file there and un-tar it you will get a corruption
	   problem since the installation procedure trys to create
	   a directory in /usr/kits THR111 that is the same name as
	   a file tar created.

Thanks again Jim for you patience!!

Peter Lamb
