I've not been able to get a good answer on this either... here are the
rumors that I have heard thus far:

1) Vitalink is writing an AM for DECmcc V1.2

2) Vitalink isn't going to bother writing an AM for DECmcc V1.2
since newer Vitalink software will have SNMP support.

2a) A techie at Vitalink told me that minimal SNMP support is
available now, full feature in a later software release.

A major software rewrite of Translan software is ongoing now... I
have no idea of when it will be available.

                              --=[ ]=--

Just today I received a V10.5 software kit for Translan 350's. I was told
by Vitalink it is considered to be 'limited distribution' status. V6.11,
the companion release for Translan III's is on engineering hold within
Vitalink.

Here is what the "Version 10.5 New Features" notes say about SNMP:

                          ---------------------
The software release 10.5 includes Simple Network Management Protocol
(SNMP) MIB II system group and interface group support for Ethernet
networks. In order to provide standars-based management of the
Vitalink-specific bridge management information, the Vitalink
Enterprise MIB is included in Appendix B of the Reference Manual. The
Vitalink MIB can be loaded into most SNMP managemnt stations to enable
the management of Vitalink-specific Ethernet bridge features.

The following SNMP traps are supported in V10.5 software:
        - Cold Start
        - Link-Up
        - Link-Down
        - Auth-Failure

The following can be forwarded to the SNMP trap host stations as
   Enterprise-specific traps:

        - TransLAN Alarms
        - TransLAN Warnings
        - TransLAN Messages

The following SNMP 'set' commands are supported:

        - sysName
        - sysLocation
        - sysContact
                          ---------------------

p.s. I'm trying to get an electronic copy of the MIB. It is 20 printed
pages in 'Appendix B'. It appears that the MIB covers more stuff than
outlined in the notes mentioned above... all kinds of counters and
stuff. With luck, I may be able to put V10.5 into one of the TL350's
here at the customer site in a week or two and see what T1.2.7 can do
with it.

The VITALINK_MIBDEF.TXT from the T1.2.7 kit is dated 27-Jan-92, the MIB
in the Cisco manual (mentioned in the note above) is dated 17-Feb-92.

Vitalink has only agreed to *update* their AM code to work in the 1.2
environment. I.e. fixes only. No new features. When? Evidently,
not soon enough. If it's important, contact either Bob Christian
    (510) 745-6010 or Suzanne Ozenne (510) 795-6173 at Vitalink. Hells
bells, write your congressman if you think it'll help...

See 1) above. They *have* agreed to update their AM. Yes. As of 10.5
they support SNMP management of their TRANSLAN line as well. Vitalink
will be supporting *concurrent* SNMP and VBAM management of their
existing TRANSLAN line (note the emphasis on TRANSLAN). We are event
including Vitalink's MIB extensions on the DECmcc BMS kit (now in 2nd
    round of Fieldtest).

How minimal is "minimal" ? How full is "full"? ;^) Actually you can
get interesting things like real-time graphs of Line utilization with
the SNMP AM and the 10.5 SNMP Agent right now (something you *can't* do
    with VBAM!) and DECmcc T1.2.7.

The SNMP variable names are unnecessarily cryptic, but the SNMP AM
works pretty nicely for monitoring the Translans. Basically there are
only a very few things you can SET now via SNMP and you can't manage
filters using SNMP.... Maybe they're planning to add filters in the
    next release.

Lee, have a look-see in MCC_COMMON: after installing DECmcc BMS T1.2.7.
You'll find VITALINK_MIBDEF.TXT in there. Or you can copy the file
from Elias's 'ad hoc clearinghouse' on PA:: (Sorry , I forget the
    directory where they're located...)

2893.4I'm doing a Vitalink via SNMP!CSOADM::ROTHThe Blues MagoosTue May 19 1992 16:3931
Just posted this a bit ago in the Vitalink conference then found your note
here...

I used the MIB that came with T1.2.7 and it appears to work fine.

Thanks-

Just a note...

I'm using TL350 V10.5 software with the SNMP stuff configured and
DECmcc vestion T1.2.7 (field test stuff) and have sucessfully 'compiled the
MIB' and am accessing counters and suchlike within the Vitalink.

Am also able to draw some nice graphs of packet rates, utilization, etc. for
serial links, Ethernet port and the entire box. Haven't had time yet
to play with setting any params or doing SNMP traps back to MCC.

Now to see if Vitalink will turn loose with V6.11 for the NP3's (it has
the SNMP support like 10.5 does)... was on 'engineering hold' last I heard.
