2876.0. "DNS at instal then back to local MIR ..." by TAEC::HAYES (Tu quoque mi fili ! C.Hayes SVP @VBE) Wed Apr 29 1992 07:29

    	Hello,

Suppose at the installation of the kit, we choose DNS
as a repository but then decide to change for a local MIR.

I know about the logical MCC_DNS_SELECTION on VMS
and the equivalent environment variable on Ultrix :

    	On Ultrix :

    	- can we change for a local MIR after installation ?
    	- What is to be done : Is it sufficient to
modify the environement variable and reeenrol
registration fm and domain fm ?
        - What are the side-effects ? I suppose you loose
    	   all global entities ...

Is it the same on VMS ?

    		Thanks for any help

2876.1Alarms will have a 'side-effect'MOLAR::ROBERTSKeith Roberts - DECmcc Toolkit TeamWed Apr 29 1992 11:0118
If you create an Alarm Rule with one DNS Name Server .. then later change
the server and reboot your system, you'll have problems with the Alarms
Extract Rules tool. You will probably have problems just accessing the
Rule too (enable, disable, show, delete, ..).

The Rule's Domain Name is stored as a DNS FullName. When you change the
Name Server, the binary portion of the FullName can no longer be converted
  to a string for presentation.

The same thing goes for swapping back and forth between the Real DNS and
  Local-MIR DNS.

The workaround is to run Extract Rules *before* changing the Name Server.
Then after the change, reload the Alarms MIR by running the script
  created by Extract Rules.
