2505.0. "Registering DS500 without image file" by WELTM1::CRIDDLE (Graham Criddle, DS Tech Consultant, 853-4015) Fri Mar 06 1992 08:14

Hi...

As discsused in node 785.0/.1 it is not possible to register a DS500 if
the DS500 image file (either generic or customised) is present on the system.

While I understand the reasons for this (so that permanent changes can be
made to the image file??) it is causing us a problem on a customer site.

We are installing a MCC station to manage their network which includes around
20 DS500s which are loaded from another VAX in the network (and we do not have
any DS500 load softare on our MCC station)

Is there any way round this problem (apart from copying all the DS500 load files
from their load host to our MCC system)?

Rgds,
Graham

Graham,

Have you tried using a dummy file name as the load file specification? As it
says in note 785.1, you should be allowed to register the server this way.
If that does not work, you could try creating a file of the same name (not
the real load file) on the MCC host so that the registration would be
allowed even though the image file is not there.

Of course, the absence of an image file means that you cannot do any
modifications to the server's permanent database from MCC. So you would
only want to set up a DS500 without a load file on the MCC host if you
are planning to do nothing but operational sets and monitoring, right?

If you have DECmcc V1.1, then there is NO version of the TSAM available
for use on customer systems. It is not an announced product at this
    time.
