2424.0. "mcc & Berkley Domain naming service ?" by MFRNW1::DENIS () Wed Feb 26 1992 11:09

Hi all,

We have a customer who is interested in acquiring DECmcc
on Ultrix to manage his network, and he would like to know
if the product supports the Berkley domain naming service.
( not to be confused with Digital's DNS or BIND products ).
Should there any reason for concern about this setup ?
or can I say - "go ahead, install" ?

cheers,
Denis

2424.1Wht is the berkley domain naming service?TOOK::CALLANDERMCC = My Constant CompanionWed Feb 26 1992 11:207
Jim Swist could answer this better, since I don't know what the Berkly
Domain naming service is, what I do know is that DECmcc only supports
two types of repositories for storing our configuration data. These are
the DNS repository or our own "private MIR".

    Jim, more input?

>( not to be confused with Digital's DNS or BIND products ).

What do you mean by this? Bind is the client portion of the
Berkley domain naming service. It is not a Digital product, although
a version is shipped with ULTRIX.

The SNMP access module will use the Domain NS for name to address
translation if the system is configured to use bind.

So you can say "go ahead, install". FYI, all of our development machines
are set up this way.

Note however that DECmcc does not support Domain NS as the DECmcc
namespace repository. DECmcc still requires either DECdns or
a local file for its own naming service.

Actually, we would love to use the BIND services for global entity data
but it isn't designed to hold all the various and sundry information
MCC needs to keep track of registered objects. But you can keep all
that stuff in a local file if you don't wnat to go through the bother
of installing another name service (dns), as Erik said.

    Ok,

I thought BIND was an exclusive Digital product. However since
it's really Berkley software, I take it for granted that it will
be compatible with what the customer is using. This customer has
a number of Vaxen installed running Berkley Unix (4.3) [not Ultrix],
    and Sun workstations running SUNOS.
Actually the only Ultrix machine in the network will be the DECmcc
    management station.
    cheers
