2312.0. "Positioning MSU/Decmcc Help, PCs Management Help positioning DECMCC/MSU, PCs Management" by LUX01::TRINIANE () Tue Feb 11 1992 14:55

Hello

I am currently in trouble positioning the "network management tools" for our largest
customer in LVG. I have a brand new knowledge of DECMCC and I just red few papers
on DECMCC MSU. The problem I have now is choosing the rigth track. We can't also afford
spending to much time internaly positionning our products especially when Cabletron
is knocking at the door with Spectrum.

What I would like to have is the following

- a comparaison between DECMCC and MSU : the current and the future releases
for the current : I don't see, for example, the diffences between DECMCC and MSU for
the CISCO boxes management : my investigations show that both are able to manage
CISCO but does it exist a difference in the way they manage it ?
for the future, I am confused because I have heard and red different things :
. the 2 products will merge
. the two phases implementation (note 376): which is more a coexistance

I think that I am not the only one to face this problem and having support will certainly
help me to convince the customer.

- a reference site (preferably not to far from Luxembourg/Belgium) I could use to demonstrate MSU.
(If MSU is the tools I should propose of course).
This site should manage both VAX and ULTRIX hosts (my customer has 2 9210, 2 6410,
n microvax, 4200, 2 Decstations, several VITALINK and Lanbridge 150/200)
also manages the Cisco TS and AGS bridge/routers,
the Cabletron Hubs (the customer is considering buying ...)
It would ideal having a site who is also managing non-DEC Unix host (we have a large number
of Siemens SINIX and BS2000 in this site also).

- any info about our plan for managing PCs : until now I just find few notes telling
that we don't have any solution. Is it true ? Do we have plan ?

Any help would really be appreciated

I have forwarded your note to product management.

FYI: Those of us who by habit use 80 column displays have trouble reading notes
with wider margins.

did you get a response from product management, and the answers
    to your questions?

2312.3Answers to my questions.LUX01::TRINIANEThu Feb 27 1992 11:2919
Concerning my questions, the status is the following one :

- Comparaison DECMCC/MSU : I didn't get any official paper that could help me.
I saw a Demo of MSU that persuaded me to offer DECMCC and not MSU.
I think that MSU is a little more develloped that DECMCC for SNMP management.
But DECMCC has several advantages on MSU like the DECNET managament,
the alarming, ...

- Reference site : I got one pointer from Norman Valentine (ie Dupond). After
investigations, it came out that they have not yet decided to work with DECMCC.
They are still evaluating it versus Opien view.
Marc Malaise is currently investigating for other sites.

- Plan for managing PCs : I am waiting info from Norman Valentine.
It looks like we have a Lan Manager AM.

Regards

Pierre
