1912.0. "V1.2 Install Failed Looking for DNS" by MAIL::CLAYTON (Merlin Clayton DTN 445-7217) Tue Dec 10 1991 15:38

I tried installing V1.2 on a VAXstation 3100 using the local MIR for the
namespace and received the following fatal error when the post install
process began:

	DCL-W-ACTIMAGE 	error activating image DNS$SHARE

	CLI-E-IMGNAME	image file sys$system:DNS$SHARE.EXE

	SYSTEM-E-PROTINSTALL	protected images must be installed

It appears that the procedure is looking for DNS, which has never been
installed on this system. I DID NOT take the DNS default at the beginning
of the installation procedure, so I'm not sure why the post install
procedure is looking for anything to do with DNS.

Any suggestions?

Merlin

I presume you mean T1.2.3. Entered as QAR 1824 in MCC_INTERNAL.

1912.2Ouch, we link against that!TOOK::CAREYTue Dec 10 1991 23:2221

    Ouch, ugly truth. We're linked against DNS$SHARE to be able to get
    at the namespace if we need to. The upshot is that you either have to
    be running the DNS clerk, or you need to install DNS$SHARE like this:

    	INSTALL ADD SYS$LIBRARY:DNS$SHARE.EXE/SHARE/PROTECT/OPEN

    The clerk doesn't need to be running if you're not using DNS, but the
    share image must be installed for our image activation to work.

    Since the DNS clerk is available on VMS V5.4 and later, we are okay
    with this as a necessarey ingredient.

    Thanks for finding this: we tend to have a lot of systems with the DNS
    clerk running, since we have required it for the last two years.

    Enjoy,

1912.3That's a little too uglyTOOK::GUERTINDon't fight fire with flamesWed Dec 11 1991 09:416
    I think that is too ugly to look at also (but then again I look at
    myself in the mirror every morning :-). I will push to have this fixed
    for V1.2 SSB. It looks as though we can just catch and ignore that
    error message if you select the LocalMIR for your DNS database.
