1804.0. "V2.0+ Futures: Network Modeling" by CUJO::HILL (Dan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer Resident) Wed Nov 13 1991 02:43

    Please let me know if this is under discussion in another note.

    I have received a number of customer requests for "network modeling"
    capabilities. Customers would like to build and test a network
    configuration model based on theoretical device and media information.

    The database mentioned above would include such entity attributes as
    node_network_interface_bandwidth, CPU_speckmarks, Disk_IO, #_repeaters,
    network_medium_bandwidth, and on and on. They would like to vary
    the values of these attributes and test network capacity and potential
    bottlenecks. This would all be an aid to designing better and more
    efficient networks.

    Are there any plans for such modeling tool? I do not know what
    WANdesigner will provide me with respect to planning and modeling LANs,
    if anything. Would it be worthwhile?

    Thanks,
    Dan

1804.1Capacity planning PCUENUF::GASSMANThu Nov 14 1991 17:456
    The ISB group, (makers of VCS) are involved in capacity planning tools
    for VAXcluster environments. As they move towards open systems and the
    evolution to MCC, I'd think what you are asking for would come from
    them.  Contact Dianna Grupposo (HYEND::).

1804.2The question still remains.CUJO::HILLDan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer ResidentWed Nov 27 1991 02:366
    Bill,

    	I've made it full circle. Dianna sent me to Jane, and Jane sent me
    to Steve Lane, so I'm back in the DECmcc development group.

1804.3Try NETcwLOGRUS::KELSEYWalking the Pattern...Wed Nov 27 1991 10:127
Dan,

I think that the functionality you need might be available from the Network
Consultants' Workbench (NETcw). Conference is at HORUS::NETCW and the guy to
contact for more detailed info is Russ Heinselman (NWACES::HEINSELMAN).

1804.4More customer requests for Network ModelingCUJO::HILLDan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer ResidentThu Dec 05 1991 13:1713
    I have all of this Polycenter-related documentation, but have yet to
    get through it all. I'll move to this document quickly.

    I presented a NAS/EMA/DECmcc PID to representatives of several customer
    groups two days ago. One of those groups is tasked with network
    modeling. I had no information for them, aside from WANdesigner. I have
    an action item to provide information on future development efforts.

    Are we going to provide such things as finite state modeling
    capabilities? This and many other questions will be formalized and
    submitted to the Polycenter and DECmcc product management groups.
