1561.0. "Can AutoCAD be used for backdrops?" by WELSWS::LOWRY () Mon Sep 30 1991 11:29

I am preparing a DECmcc based management plan for a major customer.
The customer currently specifies that AutoCAD be used, by installing
    contractors, to draw topology maps.

How can we use the AutoCAD information to create backdrops within MCC?

They need the logical topology maps to be superimposed on to the
backdrops derived from the AutoCAD data.

The backdrop maps for DECmcc V1.1 are only supported in what is
called "vector" format. In V1.2, in addition to vector format,
XBM (bitmap) format will also be supported although the
behavour of the two will be different (previously discussed).

AutoCAD is supposed to have an output form of vector format
although nobody has had the time to try and make it work.

I suggest you take a look at one our maps for the world,
united_states, etc. and see just what the format looks like.
If you can have AutoCAD output into that format, you'll be all
set. Otherwise, you may want to wait for V1.2.

When I wrote MCC_GRAPH, I had a quick look at converting Autocad DXF files into
DECmcc vector format (because that is what you need). This is NOT an easy
job and therefore I doubt that somebody will spontaneously hack this
together.

Now if there is some budget available somewhere........

Such a "hack" does actually exit.
I will make available on the net this week.

1561.4Would like to try AutoCAD DXF "Hack"CUJO::HILLDan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer ResidentMon Sep 30 1991 15:2610
This is something I've been wanting for some time. We use AutoCAD to
maintain topology drawings and floor drawings. I have used MCC_GRAPH
to output my topology drawings from DECmcc Iconic Map. There are bugs,
but the utility is promising. (I can't produce a landscape B-size
    drawing yet, among other things).

I would very much like to try out this "hack" for DXF files.
