1403.0. "Customer feedback; Better products" by CUJO::HILL (Dan Hill-Net.Mgt.-Customer Resident) Tue Aug 27 1991 17:12

Here's a suggestion that may provide some valuable insite for DECmcc
development groups (and all other hardware and software development
groups within Digital) with regard to customer needs and actual
product development requirements. What are your thoughts?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
In an effort to provide developers with a better understanding of customer
network management problems, a "time investment" program could be formed
which would involve the use of DECmcc development personnel to assist
external Digital customers with network management solutions using
DECmcc. In other words, designate one or two individuals each month to
take DECmcc to customer sites which have expressed interest in solving
network management problems, set up the environment, and show customers
how the product can solve problems. This effort should eventually
involve every member of the development team to allow each member to
experience the benefits.

Several benefits would result, including:
o Each developer will have the opportunity to get direct feedback
from customers and to experience the implementation process.
o The experience will bring back numerous ideas on how to make
DECmcc a better product - easier to use, more functional, ...
o Determine which areas of development are of the highest priority
to customers, and also which are lowest. This could result in
more effective allocation of development resources.
o Increased revenue by taking advantage of new customer
	  opportunities.
o Opportunity to significantly influence major network management
customers and to increase the number of DECmcc success stories
which, when marketed properly, would provide even more revenue.

There are several factors that must be considered (scheduling
constraints, impact to current commitments, development of customer
    relationships, definition of customer requirements & problems, etc.;
however, it is my opinion that long-term benefits can be realized.

Now putting the "Service" hat on....

Swell idea, however we (Digital) aren't going to make a lot of $$'s
selling products. Hence the organizations have embarked on value added
services, such as Network Review Services, Network Management Planning
services etc... During the delivery of theses services we find out
"exactly" what the network management needs are, engineering
involvement here would probably benefit them as well, also help
distribute the MCC knowledge to the Consultants delivering the planning.

Putting the "Product" hat, the idea is *GREAT* too often "engineer"
appear to be far removed from "the real world". Not taking a dig at
engineering (having been there I do understand how this situation comes
    about.

I also think the idea is great, and have discussed similar types of ideas
with my boss...but for now we need to get the man-power behind the
development of those functions that have already been marked as critical
to the success of the product.

That means that the input we get from you, the contributors to this conference,
has been and will continue to be a great source of information for the
engineering team. The types of questions you ask and problems you have, have
given us some first hand feedback on MCC. Thanks for your support of the
product and the productive way feedback and problems are approached; it
sure makes moderating this beast an ease (except for the eye strain caused
by the number of notes ;-) )
