1364.0. "WHY all attributes just for Statistics" by TROU47::SLEE () Tue Aug 20 1991 20:45

What I'd like to do is record circuit counters for a NODE4
Circuit Entity, for the purpose of being able to look back
at Statistics for specified time intervals.

It seems, as documented, that I do indeed have to start by
recording all attribute partitions, and not just for the circuit
of interest, but for the associated line as well.
(BTW, it actually appears that the INITIAL ATTRIBUTES and REFERENCES
partitions for both the line and the circuit are not required)

	Why?

Given that the PA can calculate circuit statistics with realtime
counters once I set the associated line speed, I don't understand
the need for collecting all the other attributes.

I'd rather not have to collect this data, and besides, it will
	use up more disk space.

	Can someone please explain this?

You need to record the Line Characteristics of the associated Line to
get the line speed. You are correct in that you don't need the INITIAL
ATTRIBUTES and REFERENCES partitions for the Line to calculate the Circuit
statistics. The documentation should clarify this.

Quite often when you have past data, specifically statistics, you might
want to export the data to an RDB in order to generate text or graphical
reports. The Exporter exports ALL partitions to the RDB. You have no
choice here. That's why we recommend that all partitions be recorded. If
you are not going to export this data, you may just record Circuit Counters,
Circuit characteristics and the associated Line characteristics.
Maybe the documentation should make this clear.

Certain partitions, specifically the INITIAL ATTRIBUTES, need not be recorded
to save disk space.
